Anyone who thinks that Ballmer went for Yahoo wihout a FULL review by the board, or even that this was 100% his own idea is a fool. For something at this level, you bet your ass that Gates is still behind it.

This represents an excellent opportunity for the Microsoft board: No matter what he does, tell him it was wrong and fire him.

Regarding all the things going wrong... I'm quite sure Gates saw most of it coming and wanted to leave with his legacy intact. Good move.
