All you local Americans are just scared to death of the very same competition you claim to be at the core of your democracy. Let's face it, Google happened because of immigrants, Intel happened because of immigrants, Sun Microsystems happened because of immigrants... and America did, too. So stop trying to protect your asses and start competing. Go found a company or something. You bitch about wage pressure, but somehow you have no problem plundering the global market for revenues. Make up your mind, compete or shut the fuck up.

ImmigrantVinay

It's nothing but lies. I'm looking at getting back to work after being a stay at home dad for seven years. Even though I now have my certs in order (which I didn't seven years ago), not only can I not see a job that pays the same -- seven years ago, I've got to take a 20K paycut. I realize I'm in a different state now (supposedly it's cheap here, no state income tax you know, which is odd, because it's not compared to where I was), but what I'm seeing even back in my old home city is at best 10K more. And the recruitment people don't want me because I have a seven year hole im my resume, even though I've gotten my current certs, so it's not like I've been doing nothing the past years anyway.

Bryan Price

@badco/LoJ: Completely agree. Sun wants nothing more than to create a sweatshop here in the U.S. This issue is 100% about keeping wages down. If Sun was really committed to high paying software jobs, they would do everything possible to keep the experienced developers on board (not the case). They would give experience developers a leg up in the recruiting and hiring process (not the case). Look at the ratio of entry level developer openings to senior developer openings, its something like 18,000,000:1. That tells you exactly what Sun thinks about experienced developers.

Nobody wants a developer once he/she has some experience and has the right to demand higher pay. The H1-B system was simply being used to set up sweatshops in the U.S. and replace native workers as they got expensive. And look what happened the minute the H1-Bs were limited, the software companies went out and set up actual sweatshops in 3rd world companies. It's what they wanted to do all along.

WagCurious

As a former H1-B myself, I am the first to admit it: the H1-B program is a shame. You work 6 years as an "indentured" slave, paid a salary below your capabilities, with the carrot of a green card dangled by your master. Then you are allowed to pay tens of thousands of dollars to really start your application process. The H1-B does not benefit the foreign worker (who is exploited), does not benefit the native workers (who are cheated out of jobs), and does not benefit employers (who end up paying the same for individuals of less skill).
Only the middlemen (visa lawyers, H1-B mills) are raking in fortunes.
Of course, there is always some other priority higher than comprehensive immigration reform ...

Mongo Aurelio

"Americans are increasingly too lazy to bother to get computer-science degrees."

(buzzer sound) Wrong answer! How about the simple fact that the students have figured out they they should work elsewhere? I've seen a lot of different sides of the H1-B mess and most of these hires are the "yes sir" slave type. They're able to be worked to death and keep their salaries low, while dragging out their green card process to the point it hurts.

QADude

H-1B must be the greatest con Silicon Valley has ever run (well, not counting click-through statistics). Post a help wanted ad in some obscure newspaper then run crying to Congress that you can't find talented engineers. I guess we should be happy that management has stopped beating the labor force with ax handles.

SFJoe

"Americans are increasingly too lazy to bother to get computer-science degrees."

Incorrect.

As working conditions for domestic software developers continue to decline, the field becomes less attractive to American students. From the employers' perspective, why hire snotty American kids when you can get workers on H1-B's with obedience built into their culture, who will work more hours in a nasty lab?

badco/LoJ
