The goal of the layoff is to remove under performers, or to reduce the system entropy in physical terms. However, the entropy usually come from those who are most difficult to get rid of, like those managers with mediocre coding/mgmt experience but best at playing politics and getting unnecessary head counts in order to climb up the coporate ladder faster.

Oracle was a good example of that. After several rounds of major layoffs, there were two kinds of people who remained: one was those managers who were best at playing politics; the other was those mediocre programmers with best relationships with managers and coworkers.

thx123

@Snarkatron: "These layoffs were not so much about cost savings as about removing under-performers"...um, no. It was very much about ditching people with high salaries - notice how there are alot of native-born Americans in the purging? That's because they cost more than lower-paid imports. All you have to do is go to Yahoo campus to observe the transformation underway!

CharBo

There's still plenty of dead weight on this ship. It's just not part of their culture to single out and terminate underperformers. Instead they do it in bulk, losing good people just to get at the bad. At least Jerry didn't cry this time.

snarkotic

hey guys, most of the layoffs were targeted at certain divisions, and those groups did have to cut deep - including some good folks who got laid off. other groups did not have to cut, but they took this opportunity to unload some under performers. so in summary, some groups lost talent & fat, and in other groups they only lost fat.

therealsunnyvalequeen

Perhaps they could have taken an approach I saw at one nameless software company where a layoff was flown in under the radar in the form of mass terminations for underperformance. They insisted it *wasn't* a layoff per se, even though we weren't going to backfill the now vacant positions. I pointed out to management in the department all-hands call after the bloodletting that I never saw someone screw up in a job so bad that they actually eliminated the position and headcount.

nethaqr

@EX-YHOO: from the names I've gotten and what I know about them, there were definitely a lot of underperformers on the layoff list. There were undoubtedly also some folks whose roles/projects were being eliminated, and it's likely that some managers used the layoffs as an excuse to eliminate enemies and protect favorites. But for the most part, the Yahoos I know were sad to see the folks go, but not that sad.

Snarkotron

@ SNARKOTRON: Bullshit re: "underperformers" being the target for these layoffs. IF ONLY Yahoo operated like they are "real" company and let poor performers walk. :::rolleyes::: There may have been some chaff mixed in with the general bloodletting, however I know for a fact that many had nary a negative review among them. One thing we do agree on - they didn't cut deep enough.

Ex-YHOO

This is not news. Jerry made it very clear that Yahoo! would continue to grow in 2008. These layoffs were not so much about cost savings as about removing under-performers. One could argue that the cuts were not deep enough, but if Yahoo! got in the habit of getting rid of the bottom 5% each year, that might bring some much-needed discipline.

Snarkotron
