Yahoo is unlikely to go through independent - they had US-only mentality while could build base in Europe for years now; they had years to make true mobile offer - and look how American-ish... ergh... I mean limited Yahoo2Go in version 3. I wonder do they have stamina to do anything?

silpol

What is strange is that no one has pointed out that this whole episode was created by Google stopping the arbitrage between Yahoo and Google PPC engines. This knocked so much of the bottom line for Yahoo that they have suffered ever since. It was one of the reasons that Panama did not have any impact; G timed the no arbitrage rule to hit the Panama launch, knowing this would put pressure on Terry.

SeanPara

Jerry believes that Y! Mail is the key to all social networks - partially true.

However, the problem is that none of the Facebook / My Space users would ever consider a Yahoo offering compelling. Yahoo tried once with Y! 360 and it sucked so bad they never took it out of beta - sent it to Bangalore to die and it did.

The next attempt is a blatant copy of Facebook and again, the wrong audience. Yahoo should realize its audience isn't the Net connected 20 somethings which are the FB/MS users.

Give it up. Jerry - let your fragile ego go and spend your billions on a good shrink.

Let Ballmer figure it out for you.

As for Sue, she an ops person. She's only good at maintaining a business not growing one.

free_day

I agree, Dan. I'm just an SMM, and not a yahoo shareholder, but from my perspective, Microsoft wants Yahoo's search market share for a damn good reason. I think they see Yahoo's potentinal. Google can't be king of the hill forever and Yahoo JUST dumped a ton of money into enhancing its search functionality for advertisers and users. That predictive drop down thing on the query box is awesome. I hear people talking about it all the time and I changed my homepage from goog to Y because of it. Making changes to my account in Panama is still a bit cumbersome in comparison to AdWords, but Hell, it's all ultimately about the users anyway, and the Y results are now just as good as Google's. It's only been a year since they made the changes, and it takes time for things like this to catch on, especially when Google seems to be the "kleenex" of the search world. Y couldn't possibly have expected the changes to dramatically affect their market share overnight, so they probably wanna hang on for a while and see if it pays off. They need to market the hell out of the new functionality. If they do that, (and can afford to) they might have a real shot.

johnwayne

i don't think it will be in either yahoo's or microsoft's best interest to join the companies. leave yahoo to compete for a bit against google. Or Baidu can buy it in a year or so at $20 a share...

dantheman82
