@WagCurious: True, I'm with you. Though, the deal sweetens after year two: "In the third year of the contract, however, writers would get a percentage of the distributor's gross revenue -- an improvement on the directors' deal, which maintains the flat payment."

shiwsup

@shiwsup: Well, to begin with, the pay is not good. Each writer has spent countless hours working on stuff for free prior to getting the short, seasonal gig that most live off of. After that gig is over, the residuals have to cover the bills till the next, short, seasonal gig. I guess you could look at residuals as the stock options of the TV business. But in the TV business you only work for a few weeks. So the structure of those options is pretty important! Agreeing to no residuals for the period of time when your content is most desirable is like taking no stock when your company is hot, and only getting stock once the world has moved on.

Note to self, stay in tech business.

WagCurious

I don't understand why the writers are so excited to NOT get paid for the first 17 days of content downloads. That's the thing with viral video, after a couple weeks you get over the virus.

So Owen, are you going to offer your writers no money for the first 17 days a story is up (and then a per page view deal after that)? What crazy planet do these writers live on?

WagCurious
