I always wonder if competing against "the big g" is a kiss of death, but when you remember that they haven't really made much of many of their products, it's not so bothersome. If youtube can kick their ass into submission, this guy should have no problem.

On the other hand, this guy needs to quit running a company and blogging and get back to playing drums for Phish.

Rick

I've been getting local news from Goolge for months. I just put my zipcode or City/State (you get varied results) in as a search string.

I seem to remember that the stories linked that way were in fact often from Topix. Why? Because I live in an area where there is no major local paper and the local papers that do exist don't have much of a clue about the Internet.

So here is a big hint: Google isn't hiring news reporters and has probably done very little but to assign the name "local" to a capability they already had.

Linking what little local content for areas such as mine to a readable web page (and maybe shoving some of your own ad content in there in the process) still sounds like a viable business model to me.

macbeach

While I have no empathy for silicon valley companies that are in trouble (The pay/work ratio is way off when compared to the rest of the country. It is a lottery.), I like what Tolles says.

I can see how some would run from the gorilla. Tolles has the right attitude. Good luck Tolles. Keep up the fight.

Fidel on the Roof

I think a better analogy would be a Food4Less plopping down next to your gourmet supermarket. Sure they're bigger and they might steal some foot traffic, but in the long run there's a clear product differentiation.

Newtman
