I seem to remember that the stories linked that way were in fact often from Topix. Why? Because I live in an area where there is no major local paper and the local papers that do exist don't have much of a clue about the Internet.

So here is a big hint: Google isn't hiring news reporters and has probably done very little but to assign the name "local" to a capability they already had.

Linking what little local content for areas such as mine to a readable web page (and maybe shoving some of your own ad content in there in the process) still sounds like a viable business model to me.
