At the executive level, great talent knows that you don't necessarily make it to the top as an internal candidate. If Google was to develop a reputation as a training ground for other company's CEOs, like Jack Welch and GE were for a while, it would mostly dispense with that objection. Whether this crew can accomplish that is another question.

Ack, I see they intend on spending the entire time at Google. Okay, I suppose that's fine. After all, Bill Gates was at Microsoft for 20+ years; Warren Buffett is still at Berkshire-Hathaway.

One option is that the three of them could leave Google at some point and start a new company or endeavor. And it doesn't necessarily have to be a tech company.

They could end up as VCs, vintners, real estate magnates, or general aviation flying instructors. Heck, they could buy a nightclub like Jamie Zawinski and just rock out.
