I couldn't disagree more on that point. Widgets are an easy way to make a user-defined "web 2.0" experience. And with sites of all kinds (online banking, youtube, netflix, etc.) adding tools commonly seen in social networks, there is potential for widgets to evolve into something much more powerful than you give it credit for.
