@Jawacg:

Have you considered the fact that this question was asked from a business perspective? To translate the answer: "No, the market economics aren't there for a device like this". In layman terms, people don't read enough books to justify a product dedicated to one particular activity. Jeez, it's amazing how easy it is for people to take leave of all rational senses when it suits their angle.

In other words, what you just said = "Yeah, I agree with him. From my perspective, it doesn't work. But I'm still mad cause Jobs said it."

I have to say that what I would agree with is the notion that people have so very little attention spans these days that, although they read (blogs, etc.), the spend very little time comprehending. That's what is been shown. Sad.

NerdBrain

I am going to say I wouldn't buy a kindle because I prefer books for many reasons (which I won't bore the shit out you here with) but just because the only thing Steve-o likes to read is his bank statement doesn't mean printed literature is dead. To be honest, I think Jobs is a dick.

jawacg

Well in the spirit of apathy lazily I repost here what I typed elsewhere regarding Jobs' statement:

Put in context (the Kindle as a product solely for the purpose of reading), his statement makes sense.

It costs $400. If we use the typical cost of a Kindle book on Amazon then it is the cost of 40 digital books.

Assuming that around 60 percent of Americans read 2 [a year] (not necessarily bought), then buying a Kindle is like buying 20 years worth of books in one go!

Of course, you don't actually get 40 books with a Kindle, you'd actually have to spend another $400. As one who is studying Business Economics, noble as Amazon's effort may appear, the data is stacked against it: [money.cnn.com]

Now because CDs are a digital storage medium it was easy for people to transfer all of their music purchases from optical disk to iPods/iPhones. Not to mention all of the stolen music. Also, iPhone[/touch] is a multipurpose device. And you don't have to pay a subscription for reading blogs and newspapers to boot!

Lastly, there is some suggestion that Amazon is going to re-price the Kindle to a significantly lower figure. They should go whole hog and release a digital device akin to an iPod touch.

NerdBrain

We're just finishing up the complete works of Laura Ingalls Wilder as my daughter's bedtime stories and I can tell you that little Laura was thrilled to get her one book of poems every year for Christmas. Not to mention, the woman from some nearby prairie town, who subscribed to a fashion magazine for a year and how they'd all gather to look at the pictures.

Magister

That's not really a DECREASE in overall book-reading. Books have always been a specialty market, which is why you can get magazines at any corner store but not the works of Joseph Conrad.

raincoaster

Oh good grief. So how many stories are you going to milk out of the content in a single NYT piece? You got, what, three, four, five from the Zuckerman interview?

You're already on track here.

Shall we expect something related to how the interface on the revamped Apple TV is a step back in the right HIG direction? That comes from the next paragraph after the Android bit over at the Times. Will that be in the same post or in a separate post from a rehash of digital distribution of media bypassing traditional cable/satellite TV, which is why Comcast's and Verizon's sprints to be ISPs first and content distributers second is so forward-looking?

Why only write one post derived from real journalism when you could get paid five times? (Or is this more like the shotgun technique, hoping that one will luckily pique more readers page views, though damned if you'll know why?)

0x6772
