@macbeach: I agree with much of what you say. But does anyone really think that Plaxo is not taking advantage of this situation? They are, demonstrably, and would be fools not to.

Owen Thomas

The issue here is Facebook's reaction, not what Plaxo did, or didn't do. After all, Facebook engages in the same "scraping" behavior when you sign up. Facebook laughably claims that other systems "scraping" their servers causes performance issues for them as if magically, their own collection of data from other systems does not.

Facebook is not only a walled garden, they are a vindictive and unethical one. If there is any truth to the notion that a community can change a companies bad behavior this is certainly a good test case. The few defenses I've seen of Facebook behavior are based on sloppy logic ("I own my e-mail address and you can't move it from one client program to another without my permission"). These same defenders of Facebook do not seem to be aware that Facebook retains that same data even if they (the user) cancel their account (but I'm here to remind them whenever I see such BS posted).

If I'm not mistaken, Scoble has been dabbling with Plaxo for quite a while. It would make perfect sense for them to pick a well known blogger to test a new service. If they did this solely to pull of a PR stunt, then I guess they are geniuses. But that doesn't change one bit who is right and who is wrong on this issue.

macbeach

I think you do underestimate the Scobleizer.

I remember his vids from C9 days - back in the old days when i was a student ambassador to MS, there was one part of MS that I really found interesting, namely C9.

To seriously think he was taken advantage of by Plaxo is highly improbable...

dantheman82
