AOL needed Netscape to exist so that they could have some kind of bargaining position over their licensing of Internet Explorer. Without a viable alternative browser to hold out "just in case", AOL could have found themselves very much hung out to dry.

Nowadays Mozilla doesn't need AOL, and AOL (and indeed the world) doesn't need Netscape.

carlfish

The blog entry from Tom does seem like some poor attempt at attention, but probably it's due to the Legal Dept. or Corp Comm. :) AOL rarely spends time on older technology, it seems, unless there is some fine print that could get them into trouble. They are a lightening rod for consumer-rights issues.

It's hard to bat for AOL on this one, but they did care about Gecko (the engine) and Netscape (the browser) in the few years following '98. Granted, there may not have been enough "zeal," as some Netscape folks would have liked, but where AOL lacked in in-house zeal it tried to make up for it later with a 2MM donation to the Mozilla Foundation in '03.

However, like most of initiatives, what the dot-com bust wounded, the TWX merger killed. By 2002 the writing was on the wall for Netscape in-house development.

Ah-hem, long live AOL Explorer.

stupindus

Antiquated, Netscape Navigator is not. Version 9.0.0.5 of the Netscape Navigator browser was released about three weeks ago; it is based on the Firefox 2.0.0.11 browser.

All browsers are buggy.

cv
