There's no question that Facebook's Beacon initiative has taken a beating over the past few weeks. The feature automatically collected and published users' activities at partner sites, and almost immediately attracted criticism. MoveOn launched a campaign in opposition to Beacon.

what makes you think the typical poll-taking end user knows that it's called "Beacon?" in fact, it's kind of surprising 29% said yes.

a better question: "Have you noticed the special, new Facebook profiles that belong to companies, artists, and other brands?"

Obviously the real spin on this is that Beacon isn't a big deal since nobody's heard about it. But Valleywag's contrarianism is pretty mainstream.

I have placed a few ads on the facebook and while I'll cut some slack because they're a startup, the ad system is very Alpha at this stage and difficult to use.
