Great post. I really believe that the true power of fan pages will not be in building more branded destinations, but in building conversation spaces for consumers to communicate with brands.

Here are my thoughts more fleshed out:

I posted a note on Facebook about this for my friends. If they become soulless shills for advertisers they aren't going to be my friend. Online or off.

They won't even get a warning like when they bombard my inbox with stupid forwards.

Just because it's the Internet does not give you license to be a complete moron.

They are only suckers if they buy into this. This is a classic "if you build it they will come" assumption. Maybe the 50 million users will just ignore the whole thing and get on with whatever it is they do in the first place with FB. Most folks are conditioned to ignore ads all together except for that .01% of the time when they do click (which is enough to run the whole ad business). But to think that the .01% (yes I made that up) will push this to their friends is a bit of stretch. This dog won't hunt.

magixman

We agree. Good news for us (FB users) is that when marketers realize we know our worth they will have little other choice but to pay for our participation. What if the most popular people on each SNS refused to add big marketers as friends if they didn't get a piece of the action?
