Is Splunk CEO Michael Baum a hero or zero?

Baum is a tremendous douche but the attitude around Splunk is "he's our douche". I only met him briefly once and he seemed like just another huckster selling the crap out of a kind of OK idea with a serious side of short man complex thrown in. I have heard several rumors about being a dick to females but that sadly seems endemic to arrogant CEO types. Plus it's just rumors.

About their new VC money, I know a someone who works there and I know they were really, really hoping not to have to get another round of funding. Funny thing though if you build a product that doesn't do some basic things that big enterprises require like say run on Windows servers or scale to the level that a fortune 1000 needs without breaking you're not going to get six figure contracts. Splunk is a neat product and I want my friend there to do well but I don't think they're going anywhere. Maybe a $50 million CA buyout a year from now or something.

Michael's been a client of my current company and my previous company. I've found him to be an extremely sharp, humorous and sincere individual. I'm young and female, and he never said anything even slightly inappropriate. I think he's a great guy with a solid company (BTW - their offices are extremely cool, as is everyone on the Splunk team that I have met.)

I know several people that work for The Baum - and they are intelligent, articulate, attractive, and well-rounded. They can be anywhere they choose - but have decided to work with Splunk and The Baum. Although I have met The Baum on only one occasion, and that was NOT on a plane (get over yourself), he was not only interesting to speak to, but has some really big, sexy feet. Basically, he's a brilliant, studly guy that is doing what he wants to do. I believe the ghostwriter and thewriter (there's a story there, believe you me -ask anyone that works for Splunk today), have far too much time on their hands and just want to be The Baum.
