Of course, the web is all about clicks. But what ever happened to the good old awareness factor? If people see an ad hundreds of times and run into a store to buy the product, the clicks are irrelevant aren't they?
Did any of the social networking sites ever do an awareness effectiveness research?

thecod

Facebook click-throughs are truly awful. I've seen the numbers on a couple of tests and they're not prettty. MySpace has the same problem. Too many pageviews, too many disinterested users. There's plenty of speculation money to be had here, but thats about it.

dogburp

@Alex: Meh, allright... strangle strangle.

But, fine, I'll bite. Please provide some links to the said homework that I should be reading. And I hope you don't mean that hilariously stupid flash video that's narrated by a little girl.

I can't belive it took her 3-4 degrees of separation to actually connect Facebook with the CIA. I work with VCs in our company and it's their job to know as many people and sit on as many boards as possible. Any relevant VC can be connected to any governement branch through 1 or 2 degrees of separation. By that logic, I'm being funded by the CIA and CSIS whatever other agency you don't approve of.

But if there's more thoughful, intelligent research, I'd love to hear it.

Slava

The people at FB are scrambling to catch up with the success of the Facebook apps. Once targeting by demographic hits, things will get a lot better. If we can figure out how to make ads effective on apps at Lookery, they can certainly do it for the rest of the site.

rafer

Heh, welcome to forever ago. As long as Facebook existed I remember regularly reading reports about have abysmal their click-thru rates are.

It doesn't help that their "targeted" ads are sooo far off the mark that no sane person would find them relevant. The only time I pay attention to them is when that smiley-face flash banner starts talking when I accidentally mouse-over it.

Oh, and I promise to internet-strangle the next person that mentions that CIA-Facebook meme with anything but disdain.

Slava

Facebook IPO will be very interesting indeed! It will be fun to watch how many investors fall for the empty hype. Facebook is just a fad. It will be replaced by another social network by a younger age group. And unless Facebook starts selling the info to CIA (and who knows, they may already are), they won't have any revenues. Facebook is not Google... Google has a business plan.

Figaro

I assume it's (currently) harder to scam facebook ads with clickbots, and perhaps that accounts for the lower clickthru rate.

What's amusing is that advertisers have such a blind spot they don't even consider this possibility. Particularly hilarious are some of the comments which claim students are "so smart" and "tech savy" they don't click on ads.

Best quote from that article: "It remains a mystery to me why such perfectly targeted ads with highly relevant messages perform so badly on Facebook compared to other sites - often sites where the targeting is less precise."

Ummm. Doy!
