Academics Danah Boyd and Nicole Ellison published a paper titled "Social Network Sites: Definition, History, and Scholarship." Onekey point they make is that Facebook is only the latest in a long line of social networks stretching back 10 years. I think Michael Scott would beg to differ there.
I remember using Facebook in 2003 while I was in college. I certainly did not go to Harvard so that graph is wrong. Blasted!
I have to agree with Romeyinfc - where's Geocities, Angelfire, etc? They were set-up in a community setting, and were supposed to be around people's common interests.
I'm scared, though. I think I belong or belonged to most of those sites.
@pepelicious: Right, because danah was perceptive enough to realize there were more college students on Facebook than on Myspace. Sheer brilliance.
