Valley's favorite warns of 'dangers of internet'

Senate Resolution 205Did you know that June was national internet safety month? Well, a Senate resolution makes it that. Because Americans should "learn more about the dangers of the internet" -- and organizations commended for "promoting awareness of the dangers of the internet." The motion, which was passed unanimously, is one of those meaningless political gestures, a cynical response to scaremongering by tabloid TV shows. Yes, your Senator is fighting internet predators! It's the cheap response one would expect of a sanctimonious social conservative, playing to fears of technological change. But not of Barack Obama, the fresh face of the Democratic party, who's struck a rich seam of support among internet entrepreneurs. One wouldn't expect the appealing presidential candidate to vote against a resolution so seemingly anodyne. But did he really need to sponsor it? [Govtrack via David Cassel]
