The new philanthropists, much like the old

Laura ArrillagaTrevor Traina with socialiteDaniel LurieThere's one problem with the "new breed" of Bay Area philanthropists. There's not that much new about them. Take the worthier young socialites, profiled in today's San Francisco Chronicle. They typically come from money: Laura Arrillaga, for instance, is the daughter of the Silicon Valley real estate billionaire; Daniel Lurie is the stepson of the late Levi Strauss & Co. executive Peter Haas, and Trevor Traina is the son of Dede Wilsey, a San Francisco society fixture. Despite the Chron's valiant effort to identify a new trend, the old law applies: the first generation makes the money, and the second gives it away, even in a society, Silicon Valley, which is supposed to break with convention.
