Here's one explanation for the purchase, by Jeff Bezos, of one of the most expensive houses in Beverly Hills: Los Angeles would be a good place for his wife to pursue her writing career. We were flummoxed, last week, on news that the Seattle-based Amazon boss had paid $30m for a mansion on Alpine Drive: the dorky online retail pioneer has no recorded weakness for Hollywood glamor, or its perks. However, his wife, MacKenzie Bezos, has a reason to spend more time down the coast. Her debut novel, Testing Luther Albright, came out to decent reviews in 2005. If the Amazon founder's wife wants to sell a movie script, it would help to be closer to the studios. Or maybe the couple are just sick of Seattle's endless rain. [Thanks to Chief Cynic for the idea.]

She wouldn't need to live in Los Angeles to pursue that. They'd have enough clout and probably already integrate with the industry as it is.
