Donny Deutsch, the advertising exec and TV personality, says the eviction of Don Imus heralds the end of hate media. No sympathy from him for the CBS Radio host, who was dropped after insulting a largely black female basketball team: "Jerkiness, snarkiness, screaming, yelling and taunting are tired and old," says Deutsch in the latest issue of Advertising Age. More importantly, says the Madison Avenue showman, giant advertisers such as Procter & Gamble, which pulled the plug on Imus' controversial morning show, are "sick of it." Except audiences aren't.
They still gravitate to shows such as American Idol with its jerky, snarky, taunting host, Simon Cowell — and they're still defecting from America's soporific mainstream media to rowdy web media. Big advertisers such as Procter & Gamble may, as Deutsch urges, push mainstream media to tone it down; but they'll succeed only in accelerating the emigration of readers and viewers to the open range of the internet. For which, internet media should give thanks.
Thank you, Don Imus
