Alex Vieux's throneroom

Alex Vieux Of Red Herring-1The Red Herring's death throes have gone from the amusing, to the dramatic, to the tedious. (Put us, and the storied tech title itself, out of our misery already.) There's been no real news for days now. So let's dig out an old story about Alex Vieux, the magazine's publisher. You knew that Vieux was a penny-pincher, paying some of the lowest editorial rates in tech publishing, and sometimes missing payroll. But at least Vieux, a Napoleonic figure, suffered along with his troops, no? Only kidding: the imperious publisher threatened to dock $500 from any employee who dared use his "executive bathroom". Any more Vieux color?

  • The likely contents of that bathroom.

  • I was interviewed by them 2 weeks ago, I of course asked "Sooooo is everything ok there?

Their response was "Some of the stories you read on certain blogs are greatly exaggerated.

I'd have to image this is similar to when a couple breaks up and you ask both of them about it. There is his side, her side, and somewhere in between the truth.

Oddly enough what they asked me about was a MySpace related story that was rather old.

  • I interviewed with Alex a few years back. His words were "I don't care about your having a personal life outside of work" and he said he would not allow me to live in the city and work for him. He said I had to live at the furthest in San Mateo because the job was so intense. He came off as an arrogant ass and the bathroom story doesn't surprise me.

On the other hand, I really liked his employees. Too bad they have to work for him.
