A news site quotes News Corp COO Peter Chernin saying Flickr, YouTube, and all the other popular content-sharing sites from the last few years are just suckling at the MySpace teat.
"If you look at virtually any Web 2.0 application, whether its YouTube, whether it's Flicker [sic], whether it's Photobucket or any of the next-generation Web applications, almost all of them are really driven off the back of MySpace," Chernin said at the conference. "There's no reason why we can't build a parallel business."
Oh, a smackdown and a threat! Here's what to expect:
- A blogger uproar. Check.
- A few articles in tech news (check), followed by some mainstream mentions.
- Editorials connecting this statement to News Corp's recent purchase of 51% of ringtone company Jamba. These editorials will say things like "2+2=MySpace will try to put more content on more phones." Well duh — that's why they made a deal with the Helio phone network.

Whenever a corporate executive makes a statements like "there's no reason why we can't build a parallel business," keep your hand on your wallet.
so it turns out MySpace is the reason i have to suffer little rounded corners and *dread* pastel palettes?! bastidges!
So... we'll be paying for the privilege of spam that we don't want while continually working on being more popular on MySpace by adding Friends that we'll probably never meet...

Web 1.0: "If you look at virtually any Web 1.0 application, whether its guestbooks, whether it's flashy animated GIFs [ugh], whether it's dumb JavaScripts or any of the next-generation Web applications, almost all of them are really driven off the back of Geocities"
Web 2.0: "If you look at virtually any Web 2.0 application, whether its YouTube, whether it's Flicker [sic], whether it's Photobucket or any of the next-generation Web applications, almost all of them are really driven off the back of MySpace"
Oh yes, and if you look at my server logs, you'll notice that instead of seeing hotlinked images clearly not intended as background images in the background of geocities pages, now you see hotlinked images clearly not intended as background images in the background of MySpace pages.
