Was Jakob Lodwick fired from Vimeo?

Jakob Lodwick lost in thoughtWe now hear that Jakob Lodwick, the fame-seeking oddball who started Vimeo, didn't quit the IAC-controlled video site — he was fired. And probably not for his views on Web development, either. Anyone know more?

  • I wouldn't doubt it. I'll bet Barry Diller wasn't too impressed with all the immature internet fame seeking and lame lip-synching crapola.

  • I'm sure Julia had something to do with this - Jakob didn't start that outbreak of crabs in the third floor mens room all by himself!

    JA found out about it from his blog, or so she says. From that, I gather that it was either a spontaneous decision on his part or not his decision.

    Still, however odd I find his self-promotion, he was an ardent and convincing promoter of Vimeo and it was his baby. I feel badly for him.

    @Sayser: that's lip-dub, Sayser. Lip-dub.

  • @lululemming: Yeah, yeah. It's still lame.

  • he posted a cleavage shot of julia in a red bra on his personal website (he has since removed it)

    Funny thing is - as much as I hate being a lawyer - my immediate thought was - hmmn female employees/HR Sh*tstorm....

    I bet my shingle that's what they nailed him on...

    As much as I despise HR I am disappointed he didn't know better - HR gives everyone enough rope - it's not that hard to realize you'd better not use it to hang yourself...

    sorry Jakob I meant 'yo'self'

    Julia isn't his employee. She doesn't work for Vimeo, she is his girlfriend. If they nailed him on that, it was on a morals clause or some such thing.

    I suspect he got a nice severance, but it was still his baby and creation. I still feel unfamiliar pangs of sympathy, primarily because he was a solid promoter of Vimeo and that product is better than the rest.

    I have a hard time believing they canned him for his blogs, as any publicity for the Vimeo service has to be good publicity. If anything, they were probably threatened by him branding his mug to the service.

  • i know she wasn't his employee my point was you can't have someone in a high position in a company whom female employees report to posting pictures of a girls cleavage on his personal website...

    WHAT? I'd be fired a dozen times by now, by companies more stodgy than IAC!

    I have no idea if he got fired, but I suspect it would be performance-related, not personal-website-shit.

    Maybe that was for his missive on calling YouTube evil. Barry might be upset this is getting in the way of his dealings with Google.

    Don't worry Jakob. You can always fall back on your first job of judging College Humor.com wet-T-shirt contests. Spring break is only a few months away.

    @Brigamortis:

    His place of employment is largely 20 somethings. It is hard to believe that his female employees sought out his blog, and took umbrage at his posting of a single cleavage shot of his GF and caused an issue with HR. Practically and legally speaking, unless there was a morals clause, I can't see that as the deal breaker here. That is a weak, weak claim of sexual harassment, no matter the jurisdiction.

    For all of his promotion of Vimeo, I can't see a performance issue, either. I think the answer is somewhere in between - that Vimeo didn't want to be branded with Jakob, and he was very much the face of that company lately.

    The alternative is that he channeled his inner Chore and Emily and just bailed on a company whose direction he didn't agree with. That seems unlikely, given his founding and very public support of the company, but possible.

  • Haha he got rid of the bong pic. Maybe he's afraid that Barry Diller is really a narc.

    Producers and writers have been talking and numbers are starting to be released. Nothing's final yet, but this strike could be soon over. What does $9.3 million buy the LAPD? It will finish the job on a backlog of 6,700 of DNA testing for sexual assault cases.

    He still owns a chunk of the company, right? CV only sold 51% of itself to IAC.

  • @Nick Douglas: yep
