Jeff Gerstmann, the former CNET GameSpot reviewer whom the rumor mill claims was fired by CNET for angering an advertiser with a negative writeup about one of their games, responded to my Facebook poke. Besides being a journalistic first for me, Jeff's message made me laugh.

It's writing like that that usually prevents a writer from being fired. Maybe someone can put in a good word for him at Kotaku.
Did you get his permission to report on this or can he only opt-out after the effect?
Thanks for the phone number Paul.
Paul, what's with the shades, some kind of Bono fetish?
Jeremy, aren't you in PR? And you didn't have Paul's number? FAIL
@Blackjack - you beat me to it.
Paul Bono -utin :-)
i'm sure boutin is crying all the way to the bank. wonder what forbes paid him to cover for fake steve last week.
@Stawker: Whatever. Enjoy the sarcasm.
When you get fired from a company like this to get your severance package you have to sign an agreement that you won't talk about anything otherwise you'll have to pay it back.
I'm guessing you could get him to talk if you can pay his $20k - $30k severance.
Otherwise you'll need to wait a couple of years.
Aw how cute. Someone called me and left a message, "Hey I was just wondering if this was really your phone number ... this isn't a creep or anything," But yeah, it's in all the PR databases, which leads to this call all the time...
Me: "Hi this is Paul"
PR person: "Hey PAUL, I've got a great story for your mumblemumble section."
Me: "Um, what publication do you think you're calling? I'm a freelance writer."
PR person: [NOW TOTALLY DISINTERESTED] "Oh, um, sorry, it says you're a senior editor at, um ...[SOUND OF DELETE KEY] never mind."
