At Microsoft, Gray (Berkeley's first computer science PhD recipient) developed technologies that led to ATMs and online shopping; his research also made mapping programs like Google Earth possible.

(disclosure: i've got a production credit myself, but it's seriously good, barbara fox interviews him)
What are the shipping lanes like in that area? Or is there any naval training activity? Had the California Current that flows in this area (Farallon Islands) changed with the current weak El NiƱo?
