Sulu joins the Starship Google

Picture 291George Takei, the actor who played Sulu in the Star Trek TV series, had a new role at San Francisco's gay pride parade this weekend. Takei, who came out as gay just a couple of years ago, was the star of Google's float at the event. Hey, Trekkies: any particularly appropriate lines of dialogue from Sulu which spring to mind? • beem me up brim!

  • Not an auspicious way to end a career, but at least he's not Gary Collins hawking matresses on late night infomercials.

  • What "end" to a career? He's been quite busy lately with the Howard Stern Show, a recurring role on Heroes, and a featured role in the recent Comedy Central roast of William Shatner, where he delivered the memorable line: "Bill [Shatner], your acting is the only thing that can make me gag."

    It was interesting to see the contrast between Google and Yahoo at Pride. Google had George Takei, Yahoo handed out purple stickers. Yes, Yahoo has a lovely pride website and lots of actual positive stuff, while Google is naturally all glitz and little or no substance. But Yahoo has *never* understood marketing, much less used their power to generate it. Hopefully whoever replaces Semel permanently will send Yahoo's sorry excuse for a marketing department packing.

    @snidleywhiplash:

    The William Shatner roast had more George Takei jokes than Shatner jokes. Making fun of Shatner's rug is off-limits, but keep those gay jokes coming!!

  • @snidelywhiplash... the problem is that Gay consumers are quite savvy about the brands that court them. Google's "no substance" (your words) approach is unlikely to make a lasting impact compared to "lots of positive stuff" happening on Yahoo's side, including Yahoo's charity fundraiser for the Point Foundation.

    Yahoo! had the longest line at its booth of any corporate sponsor at SF Pride throughout the entire day yesterday... in addition to handing out (i've heard) over 6,000 stickers which promote their Pride site, Yahoo! also had a photo booth that will contribute to their charity fundraiser. Anyway, those stickers were everywhere... you're underestimating the power of thousands of gay folks proudly wearing the Yahoo! brand all day at a Pride festival.

    Yahoo! also featured the (as you described) "lovely" Pride web site on the yahoo.com front page (still the Internet's most visible marketing vehicle) twice in the past week. Perez Hilton, and major gay nonprofit organizations are participating in their site. Valleywag even poked fun at Yahoo's Gay Pride site twice in the past month, so they must be doing something right.
