Kathy Sierra v. Chris Locke

Photoshopped image of Kathy SierraHere's why free-for-all comments are a bad idea. Kathy Sierra, the writer and developer, has made a complaint to the police, and has pulled out of a speaking engagement, after what she says were death threats against her on a website. Sierra, author of Creating Passionate Users, had been due to lead a seminar this morning at Etech, the O'Reilly tech conference in San Diego. Among those she's accused of complicity in the online abuse: Chris Locke, aka Rageboy, one of the authors of the Cluetrain manifesto, a bible for marketers. Why do these debates between web geeks become so venomous? Because, as Henry Kissinger said about academic infighting, the stakes are so low.

  • I just wanted to comment on the characterization of The attacks on kathy sierra as "academic infighting". I think it went a great deal further than that! As Edmund Burke observed, "It is necessary only for the good man to do nothing for evil to flourish" And this was evil!

  • Well cancelling your public life and stating it's because of those comments and/or calling the police in is certainly upping the stakes. And this will probably be, if the logical course of action is followed, an FBI case, because it's Internet.

  • I just watch the interview with Kathy Sierra on CNN, and I must admit I was really disappointed to hear KS admitting that she has cancelled a public engagement and has been hiding in her house.
Frankly Kathy, if you can appear on CNN then why hiding and who are you hiding from? Are you gonna let your life come to a stop because of some sexiest coward scumbags? Truly if there pple out there who really want to hurt you, hiding in Mars will not not stop them, therefore get out and live your life as you usually do.
Be strong, stop feeling sorry for yourself in public and displaying openly how vulnerable you are to these threats. You are only giving more opportunities to these cowards/scums to continue their intimidation. Besides that is in way the price to pay to be "well-know" (So to speak). Name any well known person who does not get a death threat now and again?
You are great at what you are doing, you have thousand of supporters out there, so keep up the
    the good work.
