Tonight discuss how to harness group wisdom with the darlings of Web 2.0 at Search SIG’s panel on Social Search, Discovery, and Community Wisdom at the Cubberly Community Center in Palo Alto. If you are finding yourself caught outside of the in crowd, join TechSoup’s posse of social innovators at Net Tuesday. Ben Rigby of Mobile Voter and Deb Levine of I.S.I.S. are taking on the millennial malaise in Mobilizing Generation 2.0: How Nonprofits Can Use Technology to Engage Youth. Still not sure you can tap into the group mentality? Maybe you just aren’t communicating. To get a sneak peak at the next big buzz word, head over to Books Inc. in the Marina where the editor of Daily Candy Lexicon: Words That Don't Exist But Should will be filling in for dictionary.com with a little wordplay and champagne.

<![CDATA[ Hug your systems administrator ]]> It’s no-man’s land for tech events today. So as you ponder how you will fill the hours normally blocked out for networking and personal growth, OpenDNS asks you to take a moment and reflect. July is SysAdmin Appreciation Month and here is your chance to nominate your IT guru of choice for the 2008 OpenDNS SysAdmin Awards. Glory and schwag will be awarded to the men and women who fought the hardest to keep the Internet running quickly, cheaply, and dependably. The deadline for submissions is midnight July 22, and if you're worried your co-workers won't remember you, nominate yourself. Tomorrow morning you can keep your thinking hat on and consider The Philosophy of Product at the Silicon Valley American Marketing Associations’ Product Management forum from 8:30 – 9:30 a.m. at Il Fornaio in San Jose.

It’s like watching a YouTube video only live and you can laugh out loud without the guilt. Comedy, Darling and IFC.Com are also set to tickle your funny bone with the premiere of Mary Van Note’s ten episode series, “Gavin Really Wants Me,” at the Purple Onion Comedy Club. Join host Van Note on her quest to woo the ever coiffed and dreamy Mayor of San Francisco, Mr. Gavin Newsom. Tomorrow, scrap the flag football and celebrate your independence day with a throwback to tech’s early days with a TRON and Brainstorm double feature at the Castro! “Excuse me, did she just say a seminal dose of espionage, gaming, and a young Christopher Walken? Count me in!” Exactly. If none these events have the cultural cache of a Linux Users’ Group, do not fret. Your friends over at SF-LUG have you covered. Their monthly meeting is Sunday, July 6 from 11:00 a.m to 1:00 p.m at Javacat cafe. Now go play.

Feeling more like talking shop than shopping? Put on your networking shoes and head to The Silicon Valley New Tech Meetup in Palo Alto. <![CDATA[ Oh, I'll tell you when to go ]]> The tech calendars are empty because everyone's recovering from Pride and/or gearing up for July 4th. I do have one tech event for you, though: the BMUGWest — that's the Best Mac User Group (ever!) West, to you — and they're meeting up at the Exploratorium. Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Chris Hedges will be talking about the Iraq war and his book, Collateral Damage: America's War Against Iraqi Civilians at the World Affairs Center in SF. And because I'm a good ol' east bay gal at heart, run over to the Apple store on Stockton Street to pop your collars as E-40 performs tonight at 7 p.m. [Ed. Note: It is with a heavy yet hyphy heart that we say goodbye to our calendar editor Dianne de Guzman, who's off to graduate school. Please do wish her luck and send your thanks for all the memorable events!]

<![CDATA[ Proud to be dirty ]]> This weekend's plans are enough to satisfy anyone of the tech sentiment, the GLBT sentiment or those who just plain love them some mud wrasslin'. Tonight, if you're not going to the Pownce 1 Year Anniversary party (RSVP required, btw, check out the list now), head over to CELLspace to help the Bay Area Derby Girls raise money for their new track: by mud wrestling. Not sure how this relates to roller derby, but it should be a good time. It's also pride weekend! Partying is happening all over the city, but the parade itself starts on Sunday at 10:30 a.m. along Market Street. If you're missing all the festivities, there should only be one reason — that's right, iPhone StartupCamp. It should be okay to wear your chaps and pink feather boa there, too.

Bay Area Girl Geek Dinner #2 is happening tonight and all 600+ female geeks from the last dinner have sold out tonight's event as well. Perhaps a little bash crashing is in order? Geeks are welcome (and encouraged) to come out from behind their computers and go to an impromptu dinner meetup and showing of Wall·E. You're on your own for tickets, though. If you're looking for something different, The Economist and The Second City improv comedy troop are putting on "The Art of Political Satire" at Yerba Buena Center for the Arts.

Tonight, if you're looking for tech events and you still haven't figured out how to make your web site more usable, listen to a couple of speakers from Oracle and Yahoo in Palo Alto. They'll make it all better. Chat about design over at the Adobe offices to help your site look sleek. <![CDATA[ Eclipsed out of today's event ]]> As ReallyOld pointed out yesterday, you're pretty much SOL with EclipseDay at Google. Funnier still is the fact that they don't seem to know how to work a webcam (or want to). If you're really upset that you couldn't go, attendee names are listed on the Eclipse wiki page so you can get an idea of whose car you're keying in the parking lot. You really don't have to resort to violence, though; there's plenty more interesting conferences and events to go to. Have you ever been to a "Digital Living Conference and Showcase?" Neither have I! That's what "Connections: Digital Living Conference and Showcase" is for. CloudCamp is today at Microsoft SF, too. For those looking for something in a political vein, Robert Scheer — journalist at the San Francisco Chronicle and editor-in-chief of truthdig.com — is at the Commonwealth Club talking about U.S. foreign policy.

Mark Osborne, the director of Kung Fu Panda, will be on hand for a special Saturday screening of his movie at the Aquarius Theater in Palo Alto. Two of tonight's events deal with your precious baby startup: if you're looking at the legal issues facing startups, SCORE will be hosting a workshop with lawyers telling you what you're doing wrong. Going the cheap route and advertising your startup on social networks, not billboard ads? SVASE is telling you how to suck social networking dry for every (targeted ad) penny that you're generating. Here's your reminder, then: those who may be in the area of Alexandria, Egypt from July 17-19 may want to register today for the insanity that is Wikimania 2008. Looking for events tonight? San Francisco's crawling with 'em: DiSo + Drupal meetup's at Chaat Cafe on 3rd, StartUp SF is at the Orrick Building and L.i.s.a. '08 is talking social media marketing at the Hotel Kabuki in Japantown. Student-geeks are converging at the Stanford/MIT venture lab talk, where they will be discussing cloud computing. But will the 3G iPhone fold my laundry? Will the 3G iPhone keep a litter box spring fresh or walk a dog? Will the 3G iPhone hold your hair back after all the WWDC partying you will be doing tonight? I don't think so. Roe Restaurant is having an iSocial at 6 p.m., while Ars Technica & Gizmodo are partying over at Harlot. Looking for an alternate WWDC conference? For those determined to make their night work-related, the National Association of Women Business Owners of San Francisco (that's NAWBO-SF to you, sir) will be hosting a networking dinner at the Omni Hotel in San Francisco and the second JavaScript meetup is happening over at SlideShare, Inc. UAS Green Movie Night and Forum is showing A Convenient Truth over at the Victoria Theater with further "discussion" at Elixir down the street. If you're the type to always be looking for that cool new band, Suishou no Fune from Japan is playing over at grungetastic Bottom of the Hill. Full calendar listings:

<![CDATA[ Oye, Carnaval! ]]> For those of you uninvited to the Chris Saad and Jessica Mah birthday bash tonight at an undisclosed location or heading out of town, there's plenty of fun to be had. Carnival Mecanique is being held tomorrow, with artist Paul Cesewski recreating a carnival midway at the San Francisco Dump from found junk. And, of course, there's Carnaval in the Mission, with the street fair starting tomorrow and parade on Sunday. And at the Crucible in Oakland on Sunday, they'll be hosting a party in honor of the Phoenix spacecraft's Mars landing — hopefully we come bearing the gift of catchy rhythms.

<![CDATA[ Dayplay ]]> Blow off your afternoon meeting and hit San Francisco for day events — you'll get all the business networking out of the way and can hit the Ferry Plaza Farmers Market before heading back to Palo Alto for dinner. Yahoo Brickhouse is hosting two events today: at 3 p.m. a nerdfight of Flash vs. Silverlight is going down and at 6 p.m. Stefan Magdalinski of MOO will be there. Happening today and tomorrow is the "at" media 2008 conference for web designers at the Marriott, while Interplay: The Business of Games on the Social Web is happening until 6 p.m. today at Hotel Kabuki. Can't get out of work or don't want to brave the City's traffic and parking? The Microsoft Research Silicon Valley Road Show 2008 is starting at noon at the Microsoft Campus in Mountain View. .

<![CDATA[ Book pushin' Wednesday ]]> Pushing your book is an art but when you're only given a certain percentage of sales, you'll push harder. Mary Jo Foley is kicking off a lunchtime talk right now, pushing her new book on the future of Microsoft and doing a Q&A with Dan Farber of News.com. Yahoo Brickhouse is going all Space-Age on us and hosting the folks from NASA World Wind, an "open source 3D interactive world viewer." Think Google Earth, but cooler and less corporate. The Long Now Foundation is discussing how technology can empower the poor over at the Fort Mason Center. At Cody's Bookstore in Berkeley, Cory Doctorow of BoingBoing will be reading from his book Little Brother.

<![CDATA[ Your khaki pants'd plans ]]> SF Beta 2.3 is tonight at 111 Minna, encouraging everyone to come in their Silicon Valley uniform of a blue shirt and khakis — that is, if you aren't already wearing that combo right now. Adaptive Path is hosting the "Queens of Content," Erika Hall & Kristina Halvorson. They'll be giving presentations on content strategy and creating a good interface for your site. For those with a thing for accents and technology, the French Tech Tour — featuring the 12 hottest startups from France — will be stopping at Mighty. And please, people: Flat front and natural fiber, never, ever pleats (or, worse, cargo pockets).

<![CDATA[ Foodie and East Bay lovin' ]]> Today, we're showing love for the East Bay: In Emeryville, WebDev/Web 2.0 SIG is hosting a talk on web form design with Luke Wroblewski, senior principal designer at Yahoo Startup SIG who wants to help "incorporate social media into your startup efforts" by convincing you social media is a great marketing tool and not just a time suck. And millionaire former Googler, chef Charlie Ayers, will be pushing his book, Food 2.0: Secrets from the Chef Who Fed Google at the Silicon Valley Commonwealth Club. It promises to be full of "recipes perfect for the Internet generation." Yeah, we're not sure what that means either — maybe Ayres has creatively removed many vowels from the titles?

<![CDATA[ Your Google plans (the pirate edition) ]]> We are still doing our due diligence before signing any term sheets with prospective happy hour locales. But that doesn't mean you won't have plans: Google has cooked up two events for those who feel the gravitational pull towards Mountain View. Today, the Google App Engine Hackathon is going on until the heavy-duty party hour of 10 P.M. before WhereCamp 2008 starts at 10 A.M. the next morning. Saturday at 11 A.M. the 25th SuperHappyDevHouse will kick off on the Sun campus. On Sunday, the San Francisco race we all wait for — Bay to Breakers — moseys across the City. A group of rogue pirates are trying to get a million of their friends together, so if you lack a costume, go pirate. For those of you with legs of jelly and livers of iron, SFist found a map of liquor stores along the route.

<![CDATA[ Because 2.0 is more than 1.0 ]]> With 2.0 of everything, how is one to compete? There's "Lunch 2.0" which is happening in an hour at Xoriant HQ in Sunnyvale. "The Search for a World Like Our Own: Imagine Earth 2.0" is a very cool discussion on the possibility of finding an earth-like planet — because we're doing so well with this one. Yahoo is having their SearchMonkey launch party Url's Cafe in Sunnyvale, trying to lure web developer moths to their Yahoo flame. SF Small Business Week is having a wine reception to get everyone networking at the Martin Lawrence Gallery. For those wanting to support a good cause, The Impact Fund is having their 15th Anniversary Gala at Westin St. Francis Hotel; come support some do-gooder attorney types, because they are a rare breed.

<![CDATA[ Our wireless conference is the best ]]> It seems that every wireless conference believes it's the best, that it's the one to go to. Today's conference is no different: the 9th World Wireless Congress is at the Fairmont Hotel in San Jose for the next three days. The words "Congress" and "World," mean so you should probably go. Apparently. Tonight, Creative Commons is having a salon over at Shine with Erik Moeller from the Wikimedia Foundation scheduled to discuss all things Wikipedia. Two other events tonight are RSVP-only but we're advertising them here because crashing is half our fun: Broadcom Experience is at the Clift Hotel with drinks and Guitar Hero, and Jawbone is having their shindig over at the stylish Varnish Gallery.

<![CDATA[ Kids in America ]]> Teens rule the market and their whims/trends are bleeding into your life. Remember when Facebook was collegiate only? Well, HP is totes taking advantage of this and picking young teenaged brains for insight into how technology can wrestle more cash out of their parents at the "Teens Plugged In: Second Annual Teens in Tech Conference." Microsoft's Small Business Week Business Conference is starting today at the Microsoft Offices in the Westfield Center. Baidu.com, the most popular site in China, is hosting a talk with co-founder and CEO Robin Li about the future of their company at the DoubleTree in San Jose. For those with partying on their mind, Adaptive Path is hosting a book release party at their offices and Yoono Beta is celebrating its release at Varnish Gallery. SF New Tech is also meeting at Mighty SF tonight. Use the comp code "valleywagger" at checkout and the first 25 Valleywag readers to use it get in for free.

<![CDATA[ May the schwartz be with you ]]> You know us: we love conferences. Not so much for the informational aspect, but for the drunken debauchery that follows. Well, maybe today's conferences aren't those types of conferences, but we'd like to think so. The Open Source Grid & Cluster Conference is kicking off in Oakland today and the Internet Identity Workshop is happening over at the Computer History Museum in Mountain View. The O'Reilly Where 2.0 is over in Burlingame, trying to convince those without transportation that "Location is relative." If that's true, is that why they picked Burlingame? For those with a soft spot for the "You Suck at Photoshop Series," Adobe is having an Adobe product workshop at their offices. Dick Wall is having a Google app engine talk at the Googleplex and drinks with SF Green are happening over at 111 Minna.

Also: You asked — well, one of you — and you shall receive: the Google calendar will now be "below the fold" (as it's known in Newsie-speak). For those tracking how fast the front page for Valleywag now loads without the calendar: ludicrous speed.
