Auren Hoffman's fine whine

In vino veritas, the college kids say. But Auren Hoffman doesn't think there's much truth in wine. The entrepreneur rails against the practice of collecting and drinking wine in a recent blog post, going so far to call it — well, we'll just let him speak for himself:

In fact, it is a scam. I'm not saying wine is totally useless and that no one likes it ... but I am saying that the great majority of people that like wine, like it because so many other people around them like wine. In this case, the Emperor might have some cloths, but it ain't more than a speedo and some sandals.

We think that wine, with its ability to bring momentary but powerful self-confidence and a tendency to make the whole world seem a lot easier to deal with, is far less of a scam, no matter what price you pay, than other projects. Like, say, Hoffman's reputation-evaluation startup Rapleaf. So, we leave it up to the readers. What do you think is the bigger scam, Rapleaf or wine? Vote in our poll, after the jump.

Vlog Hot: Hacked!

"Sport spirit does not have this number here anyhow no more." So true, those words, as written by Katrin Bauerfeind fan "codemonk" and badly if poignantly translated from the German by Babelfish. This refers to a Bauerfeind partisan (commenter "votekatrin") in our Vlog Hot poll who was so determined to see his gal win that he wrote a script to hack the totals, auto-submitting multiple votes per day by gaming the IP address. He/she even offered the script for download to interested parties. Thus our amusement-only poll is rendered even more superfluous than it might have been otherwise, if such can be imagined. The only fair thing to do, of course, is to suspend the poll and declare no winner, since all the heats are suspect at this point. And by nobody wins, we mean everybody wins!

It's hardly cricket to negate all the vlogger vote-stumping and sincere viewer appreciation, despite the corruption introduced by a bad apple or two. Therefore, everyone who made it to the semifinals gets to "win." Unfortunately, it turns out that lovely acrylic statuette requires an actual visit to the mall-based hell of Glamour Shots, so we can't make good on that prize. So just for simplicity's sake, anyone who made it into the semifinal rounds (all 16 of you) can choose from having the photo of your choice (you, your cat, your pet cactus, whatever) imprinted on either a deck of playing cards or a pillowcase, which are the two cheesiest gift options offered by the Kodak Easyshare Gallery. In the fine tradition of Valleywag Hotties, we're ecstatic to present the Vlog Hot poll. Which video blogger sets your loins aflame? Or since this may be a matter of degree, which sets your loins the aflamiest? Certainly we'll have to involve the Zes and Amandas and Douglasses, but this is the nomination phase. Send in any many names of you want, with links to their video blogs (home sites, Youtube, whatever). Feel free to self-nominate. Once we have enough nominees, they'll be organized into elimination heats for reader vote. Apples and oranges: Which did you need more, Gmail Mobile or Yahoo Food?

As much as the world likes to pit Google versus Yahoo, the two companies have completely different strategies, as demonstrated by product releases from both companies today that practically symbolize their content-vs-technology divide. Yahoo launched a new site section called Yahoo Food, while Google launched a phone app for its e-mail service, Gmail Mobile.

On the one hand, I've been aching for something better than the clunky Gmail mobile web interface. On the other, Yahoo has some mighty tasty pumpkin pie photos and I love me some Martha Stewart. Which product will you use more?

This past weekend, whether you know it or not, dozens of Silicon Valley socialites camped out with tech publisher Tim O'Reilly in Sebastopol for this year's Foo Camp, cookin' up ideas and impressing eager reporters, same as every year.

But this year, the invite-only guest list seemed to stretch just far enough that half of the Valley's hip young techies found themselves asking, "If my friend got invited, why didn't I?"

 The last poll of the night may be the toughest to call: our personal bet is on one of these two to take home the Web 2.Ooh crown.
 You know the term "L.A. hot," used to indicate a higher level of hotness than that of mere mortals? Fun fact: That term was invented for Micki Krimmel. "Mickipedia," the director of community at Revver hops up to the Valley often enough to party and wow the crowd — "You mean it's like a YouTube that pays me money?" — before jetting back to the City of Angels.

 Again with the stunning cheekbones! Julia French, "relationship manager" of Socialtext, is the company's go-to for press relations, so like so many Web 2.Oohers, she'll be found on the conference circuit (sense a pattern?) reminding people that yes, enterprise wikis can be sexy.
