This reminds me of Marconi and development of wireless telegraphy. Marconi was not a student of science, but one of practice. This enabled him to make a great leap forward in this field, but ultimately prevented him from scaling his technology in a meaningful way as he was not able to fully understand how or why the waves worked the way they did. Eventually others, who understood theory caught up and surpassed him whilst he was building monstrous antennas in Nova Scotia. I digress.

<![CDATA[The_Age_of_Plastic commented on Why are Jakob Lodwick and Charles Forman in Esquire?]]> @lothario: Okay then the people who bring you Scrabulous or a variety of others. I have actually tried the games on IAILWU and find (all 4 of them) a bit lacking to the other offerings available. Even Best buy has a better selection (powered by Oberon).

]]>
<![CDATA[The_Age_of_Plastic commented on Why are Jakob Lodwick and Charles Forman in Esquire?]]> @lothario: So does PopCap but with a much larger audience, scalable infrastructure and a strong female demo (with household purchase power) and yet they have not been bought out by anyone.

<![CDATA[The_Age_of_Plastic commented on Microsoft board nixes $550 million bid for Spot Runner ad agency]]> @sggrf: Thank you for the insight. I suppose it would be difficult, if they were to provide reporting for the television play, to justify what must be sky high CPMs.

What would you invest in right now in the media focused tech space?

]]>
<![CDATA[The_Age_of_Plastic commented on Microsoft board nixes $550 million bid for Spot Runner ad agency]]> Interesting, I thought they had a rather defensible business model. Of course start-up costs for television are much higher than online, but their idea makes a great deal of sense for the SME market.

<![CDATA[The_Age_of_Plastic commented on Borders can't "out-Amazon Amazon," so why open a store on the Web?]]> @isights: Agreed. Everyone in online seems to conveniently forget about the $4B local retail elephant in the room.

]]>
<![CDATA[The_Age_of_Plastic commented on Borders can't "out-Amazon Amazon," so why open a store on the Web?]]> Or much like Toys R Us last summer, they were paying exorbitant Bubble 1.0 rates to Amazon for hosting and managing. The accountants/lawyers certainly realized that building their own ecommerce presence from scratch would still save them millions per year.

B&N doesn't need their web site, nor does any other acquirer.

<![CDATA[The_Age_of_Plastic commented on Why should you care about Google's App Engine?]]> Finally, yet another way to separate the men from the boys in the tech sandbox. If your business model includes a Financial statement that ends with "Year 3, 100M users, $1.2B rev" then please use Google App Engine. It will save us all the headache of taking you at all seriously.

]]>

Please ignore this sad sack in the corner and return to browsing Julia Allison photos ("Oh that Julia, what/who will she do to next?") or Megan's tips for finding the woman of your...er... price range.

]]>
<![CDATA[The_Age_of_Plastic commented on Sticks and stones may break VCs' bones, but words just bring out lawyers]]> Drawing attention to themselves with this lawsuit will prove far worse of a strategy for the named VCs, than simply accepting a few critical reviews on a blog written entirely by anonymous posters.

Unsolicited Advice: Hire a Corp Comm Director, for a annual salary equal to about 2-3 months of legal bills you will be told the obvious: Bad move.

<![CDATA[The_Age_of_Plastic commented on Apple and Kleiner Perkins launching $100 million iFund for iPhone Developers]]> @toyotaboy: Why would they be afraid of Android? According to Jobs they own 71% of the mobile browser traffic in the US.

Likely, they want to profit from the gatekeeper status they have like every carrier or handset out there. Just like Android will, just like everyone else does. Jobs said it himself yesterday, "This is not an open-source project, this is a for-profit project."

]]>
<![CDATA[The_Age_of_Plastic commented on 71% of U.S. mobile browser usage is on the iPhone]]> @matto: Using EDGE to surf the mobile web is what makes me stabby. Maybe the 71% is from the hang time of waiting for pages to load when outside of WiFi ;)

]]>
<![CDATA[The_Age_of_Plastic commented on 71% of U.S. mobile browser usage is on the iPhone]]> @Jordan Golson: Smartphones are not the only devices that surf the mobile web. They are only about 4% of the devices sold in the US, of which the iPhone which represents 27%. So 1% of phones represent 70% of mobile web? I am aware of the 80/20 rule, but this seems a bit off. But I suppose even if this were accurate, then carriers like Sprint (and others likely to follow) who now are offering flat unlimited pricing will likely change those metrics.

]]>
<![CDATA[The_Age_of_Plastic commented on Apple and Kleiner Perkins launching $100 million iFund for iPhone Developers]]> @tamoko: Auto forward or Thunderbird?! Perhaps there is more to life than having to reconfigure said life to look good with your phone.

]]>
<![CDATA[The_Age_of_Plastic commented on 71% of U.S. mobile browser usage is on the iPhone]]> 63% of crappy statistics are coming out of Apple HQ today.

So every other carrier in the US combined only accounted for 30% of mobile web traffic? Unlikely.

<![CDATA[The_Age_of_Plastic commented on Search isn't working, so Diller tries another flooded market]]> @cowsandmilk: Which is just one of their 60+ properties. If you look holistically at the company, it does skew female. A nagging frustration of mine with their aquisitions has been the lack of leveraging these strengths as a group. It feels as if their M&A team is a group of fiefdoms, with each manager carving out a unique vision rather than looking at overall audience strength.

]]>
<![CDATA[The_Age_of_Plastic commented on Search isn't working, so Diller tries another flooded market]]> This purchase, although an interesting company, does not leverage their core audience thanks to HSN, CitySearch, Shoes.com and more - women. It would have made far more sense had they went after PopCap (which also has a growing mobile presence) then a shoot-em up platform.

<![CDATA[The_Age_of_Plastic commented on Julia Allison and Kevin Rose hanging on South Beach]]> @ZukeZuke: The issue is not one of attraction. She is certainly clinically attractive, as are many an aging party girl on either coast. The issue of annoyance to an increasingly large group of us is that the Gawker media family has made her into a home-grown blog celebrity because she gives good face, which translates to easy page views and ad dollars. This has given her a platform to express opinions which she believes are whitty, insightful or relevant. "Better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak out and remove all doubt."

I formally declare this will be my last click, and post, on any JA threads which pollute VW and are not kept on Gawker where they rightfully belong. Give me Melissa, Marissa, Rachel or a mirade of others whose appearance is complimented with actual accomplishment.

DECLARE THIS WEEK A "SAY NO TO JULIA" WEEK ON VW. If you feel the need to comment about her, or to reply to me, leave it on a another thread.
