"I doubt if Apple's App Store is truly an original idea, but they did execute quite well (albeit certainly not flawlessly). Currently, it would be hard for Microsoft to replicate Apple's App Store success, given that Apple has total control over its hardware-OS combination and that developing on Apple's platforms is free or inexpensive (Xcode tools are free, iPhone developer fee is $99). Apple uses the iTunes Store (music, movies, and now apps) to drive sales of its high-margin hardware; Apple does not really try to turn a profit from the iTunes Store. If Microsoft could get this going on Zune, that would change the game, but right now, their revenue stream is constrained by their basic business model (which is heavily weighted to sales of office applications and operating systems for computers)."
