A group of Googlers, including ubiquitous trend-upsetter SVP Marissa Mayer, did their song and dance for the press at a "factory tour" on the Google campus in Mountain View today. The big news? The official launch of Google Health, which offers features like a doctor finder and the ability to upload and track your medical records. Already, the privacy concerns are mounting.
While promising to protect the data of individuals, the company did say it will deliver reports on data in the aggregate — a prospect an epidemiologist might relish. According to the terms of the privacy policy, there's nothing to stop the company from divulging your medical history to authorities in the case of, say, a National Security Letter or any old subpoena from the courts. Not to mention employers snooping on you while you browse Google Health at work.

SaaS, what can't you do?
Why would someone use this site? I don't get it.
Wow! Exactly the same business model as 100 other similar businesses, except with less privacy. Here's one place where Microsoft is miles ahead -- if only anyone cared about electronic medical records. Believe me: I've worked extensively in health IT and it sucks. Health IT is dominated by the kind of IT people who take pride in their 30+ years in IT and who might consider a move to OpenVMS if the people at DEC would just return their phone calls. These are the people Google is trying to woo. Just leave them alone.
