Google's Friend Connect bad news for Marc Andreessen

google_friend_connect_diagram.jpgBy offering a suite of tools for websites to add a social network layer, Google isn't challenging established players like Facebook and MySpace, but instead sites offering customizable, turnkey social networks. In other words, look out, Marc Andreessen: Larry and Sergey just declared themselves the Microsoft to Ning's Netscape. [News.com]

Let's look to the bright side. The Emperor Ning knows a few things about bringing up antitrust trials against predatory monopolies.

I have a feeling the rest of the Valley will support this idea.

  • or the google to msft's live....

  • I think as Google (and others) add social functionality to existing web properties there will be a point when people will wonder why they need a web service that JUST does "social".

Unless Facebook, Myspace, all of them add SOMETHING, be it photo sharing, e-mail, blogging..., they are going to be like the frog-in-pot being brought slowly to the boiling point. Won't know they are being cooked until it is too late.

If I still have to have Flickr, Youtube, Gmail, Google Docs, Yahoo Groups to do all the things those things do, I'd rather add my friends in to those things rather than drag my friends over to something that provides no service other than collecting our e-mail addresses.

As mentioned in an earlier comment, if Facebook's servers are being maxed out just doing the simpleton stuff they do now, how are they going to match the companies referenced above who are giving away gigabytes per user? Answer is they won't. They have way underestimated delivery costs and Zuck is over conferring with a Guru in India to make a miracle happen.

  • @macbeath, I know a lot of great devs from India, but I'll be damned if several of my last projects involving india have been a big fail.... so good luck with that guru Mark.

  • @michaellamb: No, I meant the original transcendental meditation type of guru.

The technical gurus are all in Russia, hacking our servers to pieces.

  • more crap in more places.

    oh wait was that bars?

  • Andreesen's aerodynamic head is still a sight to behold.
