Why Sue Gardner hired a pedophilia supporter to run Wikipedia

Sue Gardner, the former pop-culture journalist now running Wikipedia, named Erik Möller as deputy director of the Wikimedia Foundation for a simple reason: to get him off the nonprofit's board. As a board member, Möller was her boss; now she is his. But the hire is coming back to haunt her. After Wikimedia COO Carolyn Doran was revealed to be a convicted felon last year, Gardner promised to conduct background checks on new employees. But one has to conclude she never bothered to Google Möller. If she had, wouldn't she have noticed his off-the-wall views on child sexuality?

Gardner has a difficult choice. Keeping Möller as an employee seems untenable; no respectable donor will want their money handled by someone who has conducted such distasteful philosophical hair-splitting about pedophilia, a subject on which the civilized world has an unqualified negative opinion.

Yet she hired Möller for a reason: To buy him off. Möller has never made any secret of his plan to profit from his work on Wikipedia, and getting on the payroll has realized that dream. For Gardner, it accomplished the goal of keeping her friends close, but her enemies closer; Möller is in the United States on a work visa, which Gardner controls. And getting him to resign as a director helped her move towards her goal of controlling the board.

Gardner has a choice: She can either admit that she was sloppy, and failed to check Möller's background. Or she can admit that she was conniving, appointing him to his job and hoping no one would notice. Either way, she looks weak. And that's the one thing she can't stand.

  • Gawker Media lacks [[WP:Neutral]] on societal taboos.

Somebody please think about this man's rights. He is just trying to help students understand that what's sickening and illegal today was commonplace in society 1000 years ago. Ah, if only we could give him a time machine.

  • I've got a 20ga that will inform him of his rights.

Buddy of mine can't believe how deadly I am with clays with the lowly 20. He is spot on with a 12ga and is actually smaller built.

But I digress, 20ga upside Mein Herr Dutchman's head and/or crotch, makes no diff to me. Load of #5 pellets.

  • @Troll_2.0

So Troll, I take it you'd recommend against Herr Moller being a youth leader for your kids?

Herr Moller is an interesting mix of ideas. He finds Americans barbaric and backwards, including your free ownership of the 12 gauge. However, the moral and legal prohibitions against adult/child sexual interactions is "puritanical," and "hysterical." So self defense is wrong, but molesting the defenseless is right. Can you make sense of that?

  • So, you hate free speech, is that what you're saying?

Watch yourself, Thomas, you're playing to a nasty demographic with this kind of article. What goes around, comes around.

People should have a right to believe, and say, what they want. I don't even know what this guy said but he shouldn't be denied employment on the basis of his personal opinion. I thought the freedom to think and say what you want was one of the things that makes America great.

And Troll 2.0, that's a nice use of your right to free speech to make vague death threats about another person's use of their right to free speech. Hypocrite much?

  • @eth0: If by a "nasty demographic" you mean the demographic that thinks molestation should be a felony, then yes, that's one nasty demographic.

"People should have a right to believe, and say, what they want."

They do, but not the right to do what they want. And we have the right to point out that they're wrong

  • wiki is icky
    this thing is going viral
    Hey, Sue Garner! MAJOR FAIL!!!!

  • @ethO

Ah, I hate free speech - the same fall back argument as using the word "witch hunt"

Well, as the old saying goes from high school civics classes, one does not have the freedom to yell "fire" in a crowded theater house. Furthermore, if people harbor certain racists beliefs, it's common sense to keep those opinions to yourself, as it's too controversial an issue. Pedophilia can perhaps make racism looks as controversial as a discussion about your favorite kind of ice cream.

And that's how people get when it comes to defending children from the con-artists who try to take advantage of them. Erik has the freedom to write his opinions, and we the readers have the right with react with distaste.

And, I don't know if you've thought about this, by implication, you're condemning my right to write my opinions on the subject.

As for vague death threat? Then if you see a death threat in that, then you must certainly see Erik Moller's support illegal activity against children. Why don't you get charged up about that instead?

I think 99% of the people who have children, and read this, would think, write, the exact same thing.

  • @ethO

People such are yourself, who are NOT offended by support of pedophilia, that's a **nice** demographic?

"Watch yourself, Thomas, you're playing to a nasty demographic with this kind of article. What goes around, comes around."

Furthermore, what is this supposed to mean? Does this mean that OT doesn't give his articles a lot of thought? That he needs you to remind him of the possible ramifications? What exactly does the "what goes around...." mean?

  • @WilliamMarkFelt: Children? I have two cats and a dog and I want to keep Fluffy, Doofis and Rex all away from Erik. If he enjoys kids sexually, who knows what he might do to animals.

  • "Wikifelony: the free encyclopedia that any criminal can edit." LOL

Found that quote in a bit on Carolyn Doran, seems to fit here too.

  • @Troll_2.0

What about this issue of free speech? That's still a splinter in the center of my soft palate.

Here's my take. If neo-Nazis want to march down the streets of a Jewish suburb, they have the right to do this, and I'm part Jewish too.

    But, I sure don't want these neo-Nazis
running *anything* important, and they don't. Most of them are unemployed, or have menial jobs at best. And I sure don't want them editing the Auschwitz, or Adolph Hitler articles on a website that's killing the entire print media with many millions of visitors a day.

Same thing with Erik Moller. If he wants to write things in favor of adult/child sexual contact, hey, in a free society, it's his right, he can knock himself out. However, it is *my right* to be extremely alarmed that Mr. Moller has a position of significant power at this very same website that's turning into the vanguard for the dissemination of information, and he edits articles on which he clearly does not have a neutral point of view, on issues that walk the tight rope of legality and morality.

Now, as I've said before, and I'll say again, if anyone, ANYONE, doubts my beliefs in free speech, thinks I have a personal vendetta against Mr. Moller, a bad attitude, on a witch-hunt, if you just keep the ad hominems to a minimum, I'm more than happy to listen to you and admit I'm wrong.

  • @WilliamMarkFelt: Free Speech? sure Erik can talk all he wants, the more the better. That way we know where he stands.

Personally? I hate Illinois Nazi's. But if they want to march, and let everyone know what fools they are, let them knock themselves out.

The more junk Erik, Jimmy and Sue spout, the better the world knows them and their dirty deals.

  • Wikipedia is run by a bunch of sexually frustrated middle-aged rookies. Jimmy leaves his wife and is (publicly) sleeping with everything that moves. Sue leaves her husband and is (publicly) sleeping with Jimmy. Erik has a (public) thing for little kids. There is absolutely nothing professional about this team. They need to get rid of Sue and start over.

  • @Troll_2.0

You mean those bums are marching today?

5,007 views for this article so far. Along with the several thousand other views of the other articles about Moller, I think this means one huge PR nightmare.

Sure, the "New York Times" hasn't bitten, and that's probably part of the reason for Jimbo/Gardner/McNamee/
deafening silence on this issue. They're thinking this is just Valleywag, a gossip rag run by 11 year olds, so if we ride out the storm, this whole issue will go away.

This may have been true with all the other antics we've read about here in these pages, but I really don't think so with this issue. With this many views, and this much inevitable word of mouth, if this story doesn't have NYT legs, it sure as hell does with the peeps. And pedophilia does not mesh well at all with the average websurfer who has no idea who any of these people are, like Jimbo, or Zuck, or Jerry Yang, and barely know who Steve Jobs, and only know that Bill Gates is the richest guy in the world.
And this is where Wikipedia has a huge problem, and with every day of silence, the grave gets about 1 foot deeper.

  • NYT? They are all moral relativists with a neutral POV like Erik and Jimmy.

NYT is old media, a dinosaur, who cares about them anyway?

  • @Troll_2.0

They still run all the print *and* TV media. But, in a sense you're right, they are dead, and ironically, Wikipedia has played a part in killing them.

And that's why this silence, business-as-usual, and Valleywag is a blog run by 11 year olds strategy, is eventually going to do Wikipedia in.

There's what, 500 some odd members of Congress, almost 600? With the viral nature of this story, just a matter of time before someone who wants some more votes decides to go after the website which does more to support, than remain neutral, to pedophiles. And is pedophilia really anything that anyone can be neutral about?

  • @WilliamMarkFelt: Valley Wag is a blog run by 12 year olds? Begs the question: When is Erik cuming to work for the VW?

Blog run by 12 yer olds? That is Wikipedia, not VW.
