AMD accuses Intel of microprocessor payola

Studio64_Hector.jpgStruggling chipmaker AMD has added a new allegation to the company's antitrust complaint against rival chipmaker Intel. In a 108-page document filed in federal court, plaintiff AMD accused defendant Intel of paying manufacturers like Dell not to use AMD processors, citing internal emails and other documents which were turned over through the discovery process in the case. AMD has been struggling, having laid off thousands in the last few months. CEO Hector Ruiz, pictured here, is expected to make a major announcement today in Austin, Texas, possibly splitting up the company into separate chip-design and chip-fabrication businesses.

Like how Sony paid $120M and $400M to Fox and Warner respectively to get them to side with blu-ray?

    It's industry practice.

  • That doesn't make it right. Keeping AMD and Intel at each other's throats is good for consumers. I dread to think what things will be like if Intel finally corners the market for processors (they aren't that far from it now). Prices would go up, but more importantly innovation would go down. I would love to see the PowerPC come back as an alternative in more than just XBoxes and Playstations. My Powerbook is the most reliable computer I've ever had and probably will be until the disk drive goes or something. It runs circles around an equivalently speced Intel chip and of course isn't vulnerable to most computer viruses which target Wintel machines.

@macbeach: It's more like keeping AMD nipping at Intel's ankles is good for consumers.
