Video-sharing site Stickam — owned and operated by a Japanese porn company — wants to pay some guy named Leo Laporte $100,000 to stream his podcast called This Week in Tech, or TWiT, exclusively for one year. Confused? So are we. And when we did the math, our bewilderment grew.
Our source tells us Laporte gets about 700 to 1,000 simultaneous viewers when TWiT streams over Ustream.tv. TWiT's Ustream profile page says the show has been viewed 647,249 times so far this year, suggesting Stickam plans to pay Laporte a $51 CPM. For a moment, a I felt a jealous twinge typing those numbers. But that passed as soon as I discovered a list of TWiT's regular guests on Wikipedia. They include: "John C. Dvorak, Roger Chang, Patrick Norton, Alex Lindsay, Wil Harris, Jason Calacanis, Veronica Belmont, Molly Wood, and Tom Merritt."

stickam is the only thing going on in the user streaming space though
I chalk it up to a simple mistake in translation, they obviously were thinking his show was named 'TWaT'.
He's been around forever. He had a big radio show or something at some point, and he may be doing other things for them beyond just hosting the show, like leveraging his experience on the business side, connections, etc.
You seriously didn't know who Leo Leporte was?
Harry "not that he is Mick Jagger or anything..." Wang
Laporte is even more ignorant of the subject he covers than Dvorak. The first and last TWIT show I heard a couple of years ago featured the two of them talking about AJAX (the web programming technique), and their ignorance of what it was didn't prevent them from yacking for twenty minutes.
TechTV FTW!
Leo Laporte has been around bay area radio for a long time. He had a weekend show on KNBR for years with Dvorak. It was moronic -- Leo would talk over Dvorak, answering caller questions he clearly didn't know anything about. Dvorak, clearly more of an expert than him, could hardly get a word in.
I think he now has a radio show on KGO on weekends. I haven't bothered to listen, and I sure as hell didn't follow him to podcasting.
I do listen to some of his stuff and enjoy it mostly for the entertainment value. No one should take what he says as the final word (though you should never do that with anyone). But if he is so horrible, who do some of you suggest listening to? Preferably on podcasts.
Stickam had to throw out some cash, otherwise UStream would have the Geek Lifecasting trifecta with Pirillo, Calacanis and Laporte.
I don't really care whether Leo's an expert or not as long he produces entertaining and informative content and TWiT is one of the better independently produced podcasts out there.
That being said, I caught the first TwiT live this past weekend on Stickam, and it really didn't do much for me. What's that saying about a face for the radio...
@Michael_Irie
You'd be surprised at what companies pay bloggers to do!!
the dude is an overpaid tech support guy with a microphone...
From what I heard in the past year Laporte only broadcasted himself on stickam/ustream doing his shows by himself sitting in front of a computer(the guests were on skype without video) and in the future he plans to invite guests to his new home studio, so that might explain the low number of users so far.
@maristcf1: Why would you have to listen to anyone? I hope you don't follow that idiot Steve Gibson as well.
Hi, this is Andy Oliver, PR for Stickam. Just want to make some corrections to the post:
1. Stickam is not owned and operated by a Japanese porn company! Unfortunately that link was to a story that appeared last year which was inaccurate, to say the least
2. Stickam is live streaming, rather than video sharing
3. Re $100K, makes it sound like Stickam is writing Leo a check for $100K which is not the case (!). I don't know what the $$ terms are. I do know sponsorship and revenue share are part of the agreement. When the agreement is signed Stickam will make an announcement
Thanks
Andy
@dalejo: I listen to a lot of things (not all tech) because my only free time usually is in the car commuting. Plus feeding off of the knowledge of others is a smart move, you can't learn it all yourself. And no, I don't listen to Steve Gibson. I listn to TWIT, Macbreak Weekly, and his radio show. Like I said, mostly entertainment value. But as someone who does desktop support he can be informative sometimes too.
I am not following the math here. Leo plans to do 25 hours a week. If he gets 750 viewers per hour that's 18,750 viewers per week. $100,000 divided by 52 weeks is $1,923.07/week. Doesn't that work out to a $109.89 CPM rate? Either way what this piece doesn't get is that, even at $110 CPM, Stickam is getting a great deal. Leo brings quality, legitimacy, and huge amount of buzz in Stikcam's target market. I just hope Leo's presence cleans up the neighborhood. Stikcam at the moment seems to be mostly soft core webcam porn.
