ABC News's thesis that "Everyone Is 'Tweeting'" is quickly disproven — in the latest article on Twitter from ABC News. It begins with the obligatory anecdote about James Buck, the Berkeley student briefly jailed in Egypt:
[W]ith help from the Egyptian bloggers who received the message and alerted his university and the U.S. Embassy, Buck walked out of the police station a free man. His translator Mohammad was left behind.Mohammed Maree, who made the mistake of getting anywhere near a protest with a cocksure Berkeley J-schooler, is still in jail. And I doubt Buck's continued tweets will be much help in freeing him. Because hardly anyone outside San Francisco's self-involved startup circles uses Twitter, and an email or text message would have been just as effective at saving Buck while leaving Maree stuck in a cell. I agree, I've had to block Scoble, and really, all of the Twitter crap is San Francisco based. You'd think it would take off like wild fire in the much connected, in the know Washington, D.C. crowd, but I still think they just don't get it. Oh well.
There's nothing to get. People send me text messages, and I check my email. I don't feel the need to stop eating a delicious slice of red velvet cake for 20 seconds to type "eating slice of red velvet cake :P lol" on twitter. It has absolutely no relevance to me or anyone I know, nor do any aggregate services.
For the midwest perspective, I don't know a single person who uses Twitter
I'm a New Yorker and I use Twitter, uh, kindof incessantly, as do many other New Yorkers I know. I think it could easily get out of hand if you are trying to follow too many people, but lately I hardly have time for more than 140 characters, so it's perfect.
The only people who use Twitter are also the only people who read Valleywag. Ask anyone who you know whom does not read VW if they have ever heard of Twitter and you will be greeted with a blank stare and change of subject.
at the risk of sounding like i take the exaggerations of snarky a**holes literally, i second lustylady's comments. twitter != valley(wag)-only.
quite a few ATLiens also use twitter [twitter.com]

@cruci-fiction: Michael Arrington just read this and screamed out loud "I DO NOT READ VALLEYWAG!"
