Slow-motion newspaper-industry death continues

Newspaper readership, long resilient, is now clearly dropping. Paid circulation from September 2007 to March 2008 dropped 3.6 percent from the similar period a year ago; Sunday circulation dropped 4.6 percent. [Reuters]

  • Pretty fast if you ask me. Some of the individual results are shocking. Especially when you consider that the readership numbers as a percentage of population are already insignificant.

  • I suspect that it's even worse for the newspaper industry than it appears. We receive a newspaper and we don't pay for it and have never been billed.

    There's a video of Linklider in 1972 talking about how the Internet is going to kill newspapers. It took a while, but it's finally happening.

    For those interested in this kind of stuff, editor and publisher dotcom is a good read.
