New hybrid Prius to conspicuously consume slightly less gas

Details have emerged about the latest model of the Valley's most self-righteous ride, the 2009 Toyota Prius, which hasn't been significantly updated since 2004. It will reportedly be longer, faster and more fuel-efficient. Also, the range of available models is expected to grow — anything from a smaller coupe to a larger, Lexus-like luxury sedan. What's not mentioned?

A factory-installed plug-in hybrid option — though I wonder if tapping a coal-powered electrical grid improves the Prius's carbon footprint that greatly. The real questions are: Who will prove more environmental in the court of pseudoscientific, envirosocial one-upsmanship — the owners who hold on to their existing vehicle, or those who trade in for the new, more fuel-efficient ones? And will the Bay Area see more violent, Prius-hating backlash?(Photo by Rick Audet)

You forgot to mention that this is the same power grid that had an east coast blackout and California rolling blackouts.

It is a little easier to improve the cleanliness of power generation from a single point than it is to switch every single driver over to a different transport mechanism. But I guess that point is kinda lost on Jackson ("there'll always be coal in them thar hills!").

  • @ sample032

    ever hear of Enron?

  • Not surprised to see the Prius is now coming with the Libo-Wanker Bumper Activist option

  • @sample032: Why is it that everyone rolls out this cliche?

According to a DOE study, there is enough excess generating capacity during the night and morning to allow more than 80 percent of today's vehicles to make the average daily commute solely using power from the grid.

As to your smug "question" regarding trade-in's, I don't suppose you considered that it puts a cheaper used hybrid on the market so that someone ELSE can retire their Chevy Subdivision.

  • @isights: You liberals have a snappy answer to everything. How about a snappy answer to my Rover crushing your Prius?

@isights: @WagCurious:Perhaps a better way to pose the question is: "What kind of fucking ingnorant asshole doesn't know that any modern commercial power generation plant produces its energy alot more cleanly per kilowatt than an individual internal combustion engine?"

And lo! I just happen to have an answer to that query, my friend: "The kind of fucking ignorant asshole who doesn't know shit about cars or power plants, that's what kind of fucking ingnorant asshole we're talking about!"

The same asshole who wants to make Prius drivers look like the bad guy because they are so 'smug'.

    (No, I don't drive a Prius. But I don't hate them, either.)

  • @isights: you liberals are so confused and simple. Such point missers.
    Read here: [www.misanthropytoday.com]

  • @andyfox1979: Wow, I hope that was sarcasm, but in case it's not, I'd like to contest a couple of points from the misanthropytoday article:

One VERY untrue statement is that the 2008 Aveo gets 34 MPG. According to fueleconomy.gov, the Aveo averages 26 MPG, and the 2008 Prius gets 46. That's 20 MPG difference (from an unbiased source). That's better than most SUV's and trucks get alone!!!

Plus, as most of us tree-hugging liberals will tell you, the gas is nice, but the Prius is also rated as a SULEV - Super Ultral Low Emission Vehicle. It's emissions are way lower than the vast majority of vehicles, hence better for the environment.

The sign the guy is holding that was PSed to say 'he's holding the sign backwards', a minor thing, but I'm throwing this in to show the maturity level of the site. Who's to say the sign wasn't double sided to reach more people?

There are many other things in here, but I'm actually a little sicked by people that are too lazy to do some UNBIASED research. You get some political talking point in your head and you believe what you want to hear.

There's nothing wrong with driving a Prius. We're not all smug a-holes. Some of us actually care about the world, and though it's a small step, it's a step nonetheless.

  • Oh, and just so you all know, the figures I threw out were the revised EPA figures, and have actually been tested in the field. The sticker shows 60 MPG in the Prius, and higher with the Aveo, but I prefer actual documented numbers.

  • Some people who want plug-in hybrids have solar panels on their roof, like that actor Ed Begley Jr. Too bad they can't sell the plug-in Prius with an optional set of solar panels for the roof of your house.

  • What's with the idiotic Prius hate. It's definitely on the list for my next car just because gas prices are murdering me, and I don't even drive a guzzler.
As for whether I'd be putting another car on the road, it would just be taking the place of some other car I would have bought. It's not like people go and buy a Prius when they wouldn't have bought anything else, they would have just bought some other car.
Anyways it's now in the top 10 best selling vehicles in America (by quarterly sales) at #10, so it's not like it's only a hippy mobile.

Solatec LLC has introduced an improved version of its popular Photovoltaic (PV) Panel Kits for the 2004-2008 Toyota Prius.
