Al Gore, Kleiner Perkins raising $400 million green fund

al_gore_will_crush_you.jpgJohn Doerr and Al Gore have been taking their pitch for a new $400 million environment-friendly venture fund to prospective limited partners, and have already hired a veteran investment manager from Goldman Sachs to run it. This fund, which would invest in late-stage — that is, larger — clean energy and carbon reduction projects, comes in addition to the money already reserved for cleantech in KP's $600 million early-stage investment warchest. Helping to scale electric car manufacturing comes to mind — KP just threw some money at Norway's Think Global. And existing ethanol distillers could also benefit. After all, that kind of money would certainly buy a whole lot of Brazilian slave labor. (Photo by AP/Graham Hughes)

  • Extremism in the name of personal profit is no vice?

  • Gore, could you just....stop doing stuff and start getting ignored? Thanks.

  • @googoobaby: I think you meant personal profit in the name of extremism by the Vice. No?

What's with the hatin' on Al anyway? I understand, he's the poster child for the environmental movement now, but can't we all agree that the environmental movement is kinda important and that it needs a poster child?

  • @weatherman: You're missing that he's become a very rich man by exploiting this. While the environmental movement is important, the dangers are far from what they say.

  • @dalejo: Believe what you want. One thing that you manage to forget is that the rest of the world around us are making their stands in trying to help make the earth last a little longer where as most of the ignorant American pro-Bush fools who live on big oil will throw any stupid excuse to think global warming is a crock, only because it just might hurt their greedy pocketbooks. There are rich business men and women who use that excuse and there are the other 70% even more ignorant middle class and poor families who do nothing but whine, gripe, and complain about all of these problems but yet refuse to lift a finger to do their damn part in helping out with solutions. Also what is even more sad is that those of you who are too lazy "busy with work ...blah blah blah" would rather believe that this Global Warming issue is all BS and Al Gore is just another scam artists trying to make millions off of the issue of "being green". You really need to start reading news that is published from outside of NA such as Europe, China, Malaysia, Indonesia, Greenland, and the UK. The US media is and always will be totally biased. It might actually surprise some of you who think nothing is wrong with how we live and pollute without a care in your mind. You also need to travel outside of the USA and start exploring the rest of the world like Al Gore has.

I have met Al Gore in person when I was visiting in Indonesia and he made a visit there. One thing that I do know is that he is serious about trying to change the way the US pollutes and emits their high levels of greenhouse gasses. If you think he is so wrong in trying to get us to become less wasteful then instead of bitching about Al Gore or preparing your yet developmentally challenged ignorant reply (flame)towards me I would challenge you do do something more besides putting your cigarette in the trash vs throwing it out the car window.

@dalejo: He was a very rich man before. And if he were greedy, why would he have become a photojournalist in Vietnam? Short, easy road to riches it is and was not.

But: Is it just me, or is he starting to look like L.Ron Hubbard?

Ah yes, everyone's favorite psychopath. Interesting VP Gore article, NYT circa 1994.

Shouldn't Al Gore be busy licking windows somewhere?

  • @tanooki2003,
"the rest of the world around us are making their stands in trying to help make the earth last a little longer"

Are you mental? The rest of the world is still riding 2 stroke motorcycles!
You think they give a crap about the environment? PLEASE!
I met Al Gore too... during the green summit in Lake Tahoe many moons ago... He was riding in an environmentally friendly 40' Scarab!

  • @raincoaster: He was worth about $1m before his crusade started, he's now worth 100 times that.

  • @tanooki2003: You would do a lot better if you questioned more things instead of being so closed-minded. Fools like you are why the scientific method has been run over roughshod on this issue.

Your level of ignorance is only superseded by your hypocrisy.

@dalejo: My dear man, you have no idea what you are talking about. Both Gore and his wife are from old and significant, if not jaw-dropping, wealth.

  • Look carefully at this photo. The truth is, he was fondling nylon Truck Nutz in his mind, while all the time discussing Global Warming. He is a crafty dog, never let him fool you into thinking otherwise.

  • @raincoaster: Al became a photojournalist in the Nam because it both provided a necessary ticket punch for his dad's plans and obviated the chance of him becoming an infantryman there.

  • @raincoaster: I believe my statement is still factual for his personal wealth (although it looks like he was worth closer to $2m). Just because he comes from old wealth doesn't mean he has it.

  • @DoctorNine:

Awesome pic, he does look like he's going to "cup da balls".

  • Al Gore is a joke! he gets rich promoting biofuels and scarring people about Global Warming, while people around the world riot over food prices!

Your desperate need of remedial english instruction has scarred me permanently.

  • @drunkcanuck: @DoctorNine: Now, see, that pic reminded me of another public figure from the past: [media.npr.org]

  • @googoobaby:
Actually I think he was a photojournalist while in the Army, in a non-combatant military position. I'd guess that strings were pulled to get him a (mostly) desk job because the shooting part of the conflict, well, that was dangerous and involved lots of bullets and explosions.

  • @GiltProto: That's what I meant, but I was a little minimal in my wording. Best of both worlds, Army record in a warzone, but mostly piloting Saigon bar girls.

I too am against global warming, but this guy totally decimated the video I sent to him. I'm not kidding, take a look on the write up I put together documenting this at [greenscreencinema.com]
