Marissa Mayer blames pesky humans for Street View privacy problems

marissa_mayer.jpgIn a perfect world, humans would be encased in tubes, their body heat powering massive datacenters and their minds chained into a virtual reality that involves clicking on lots of text ads online. That's according to Marissa Mayer, who blames "flaws of the real world and human error" for Google Street View's many invasions of privacy. The remarks came in an interview with the Sydney Morning Herald as Google prepares to release it's creepy-but-useful technology down under. But don't worry, they're working on an alogrithm to fix the problem — and if it's anything like the algorithms used to detect copyright infringement on YouTube, we'll be living in the Matrix before it's done. That is, if we aren't already.(Photo by Mark Levin)

  • It would be so much easier to run Google if they didn't have idiots complaining about everything.

Let them eat cake right Marissa?

  • Well written bit, JW. Funny

  • I find the whole google street thing a little over the top. I suppose its useful if you want to look at what a nieghborhood looks like before looking at a house/apartment etc. This is funny though:

Instead, the aim was to help people "find and locate the places you're looking for very quickly visually because you've already seen a picture of them online".

Yes Marissa, it's a real challenge for us all to find a particular address. The horrors. I've spent days just wandering in circles, if only I had a visual aid beforehand! Damn it all!!

Thats a great pic of her on the actual article page btw :-). Looks very attractive. I envy the lucky bastard that's going to close that out some day. Brains, looks and an enormous bank account. Good times.

  • Would it be legal in the US to set up a live stream following around a couple of Google top managers every minute of the day that they're outside (and watching their houses and windows for the remaining time)?

@Philipp Lenssen: I bet iJustine could advise on that!

  • @hatebook: Actually in well populated urban areas, it can be very useful to find businesses or jug-handles. But that's just me and I live in NJ where that happens alot. It's also helpful if you are driving around NYC or Philadelphia for that matter. Most streets in these areas follow different rules depending on the time of day and NO map program accounts for those at this time.

    I find Street View useful.
