In the case of Jacksonville, Oregon's Robert Salisbury, whose property was ransacked after a "Free Stuff" free-for-all allegedly sparked by a Craigslist post, the San Francisco-based community website turned over the IP addresses under subpoena. The Jackson County Sheriff's department then tracked the location back to Amber Herbert, who turned over a computer. A hard drive search connected the machine to the post. Herbert has now admitted to stealing saddles from Salisbury with husband Brendon Herbert's help. But another post from the same computer could have been their undoing — and may also play a role in their defense.
This listing for an abandoned horse is likely the one mentioned in the police report posted by The Smoking Gun. Salisbury, according to reports, was away from home as it was being looted, only returned after a woman called to claim the horse. Now a commenter at the Medford Mail Tribune's website claiming to be Amber Herbert's sister is coming to the suspect's defense, suggesting she was innocently motivated by concern for the horse — not the few hundred dollars the stolen saddles were sold for. With the much feared "griefers" threat now laid to rest, the media can move on and label the suspects "misguided animal rights activists." My money's still on meth.

I'm not thinking meth. The guy, in particular, looks way too self-aware. Also, they both still have a little facial fat left.
That is a mean prank.
I could see Tina ridding the Horse.
Man. Proxies, wi-fi spots, open neighborhood wireless routers, Best Buy internet connected PCs, (smaller) university lab PCs, the list goes on.
Add a favorite disguise with old clothes, a hat, gloves, and glasses if you are worried about a camera and/or fingerprints (or small pieces of tape on fingers).
Spoof a different MAC address if you are ultra-paranoid and plan to return to the scene of the crime for re-use (and fear they may lay in waiting for you). Please don't state "MAC address is not sent/routed" as that is not what I am saying here.
Amateurs!
Harry "not that I do any of this" Wang
@FiveStarEggRoll: Are you kidding? I was shocked to discover that they even had internet access in Oregon.
@matto: I may be biased as I knew a couple hardcore warez men from Coos Bay and Eugene back in the pre-internet days.
Harry "you do have a point" Wang
@matto: all joking aside, Oregon's soil is not just ground for growing berries and potatoes. It's got so much not-so-dark anymore fiber running in it that Google and MS built giant server farms over there, and Yahoo purchased land a few years back to do the same (don't know if they ever built theirs).
You know, if you've got a lot of hot saddles to get rid of, it would be real nice if you could somehow get the email addresses of a bunch of horse people who are soft touches. I'm just sayin.
