Palm poaches another Apple executive

jobsrubinstein.jpgJon Rubinstein, the chairman of Palm, is once again striking former boss Steve Jobs where it hurts — Apple's talent. The latest hire: Lynn Fox, the head of Mac PR, joined Palm earlier this month. For a PR person, she's made the move surprisingly quietly; her name has yet to appear on any press releases. As with Mike Bell, the Apple veteran who now heads Palm's product development, Rubinstein is likely trying to keep things quiet. Relations between Palm and Apple, whose iPhone is walloping Palm's Treo, are tense enough as it is.

What sort of frontal lobe damage would it take to make this career move seem smart?

  • @matto: You left a mention of Jason Calacanis out of your comment.

  • Let's see: they got Ruby-Ruby-Roo, who seems to delight in bad moves like staying on Motorola while they "get their act together" and giving IBM "a little more time"....

Mike Bell, the dee-dee-dee surfer dude who always seems to be caught off guard....

...and now they've got the PR lady.

Countdown to Apple buying Palm...20 months.

  • They could poach the entire Apple org chart and I don't think they could revive this company. Like so many others, they lost their way when they got obsessed with "keeping up with" Microsoft. they failed to do that (it's a rigged game) and lost the low end to a dozen other companies.

Long uphill battle for them to be a cell phone player and not too many people are interested in a separate PDA (is that term still in use?) any more.

But I'm not sure where Apple goes from here either. They make yuppie computers and cell phones. What's next? A cute little motor scooter with iPod socket and aluminum and white styling? Glow in the dark seekers that pulse to the beat of whatever you are listening to? Metallic tint contact lenses? Who cares?

  • @matto: I was thinking something along those lines, too. Talk about a "career limiting decision".

I was interviewed by them a while back but I declined because Palm is a loser company. My guess is they want to be bought by someone, as they're just dying.

  • Let the highest bidder win. Fuck loyalty.

@Dweezil: The Calacanis thing was an experiment in "theme days". It didn't really go so well, what with the spelling and all. Maybe next Wednesday I'll try something else.

@QADude: Totally! I couldn't imagine telling my friends that my new job is at Palm without blushing in embarrasment.

  • @matto: Are you taking requests? If so, I'd like a theme day involving either Daniel Baldwin or Ed Rendell.

  • lynn fox is a raging bitch who deserves palm.

@Dweezil: Were it today, it would be James Cayne day. Who knows what hilarity next week will bring!

  • Lynn Fox is decent and fair and good and all the things you'd want in both an employee and as a friend. Anyone is lucky to get to work with her.

    @SharValley: *cough*

  • @matto: Lynn Fox is a beacon of hope in the cruel, cruel darkness that is this world, always fighting for the righteous causes with the personal mandate of Christ. I know Lynn Fox, I went to school with Lynn Fox and you, Owen Thomas, are no Lynn Fox.

  • @SharValley: clearly you're a delusional flack.

  • Actually, judging by her/his comments, shar works at/with Apple in some capacity. Pity your too busy being trite to notice...
