Justin.tv -- one year old and still full of illegal content

Lifecasting site Justin.tv has come a long way since banning a broadcaster for one night of indecent exposure — that is, sexual acts. There may be less porn now, but other illegal content now graces Justin.tv's servers. Right now I'm watching a stream of Fox Sports Net West's broadcast of the San Diego Padres playing the Los Angeles Angels. Last night, more than 2,000 people watched the NBA's Los Angeles Lakers play. Given Major League Baseball's draconian online reporting rules — no more than seven photos from any game; audio and video clips can be a maximum of two minutes and can't be streamed live — we doubt the MLB is happy about this.

You can read others' "exclusive" posts with lots of fantastic-sounding statistics about how well Justin.tv is doing. Short version: the site has 57 years worth of video that no one will ever watch in its archives. Too bad those bloggers didn't bother to count the hours of improperly streamed videos. We suspect investors and potential advertisers, not to mention MLB and NBA attorneys, would be a lot more interested in that figure.

  • What a gigantic fail this is gonna be!

  • All you have to do is sign up for this thing, launch any old content and then point your webcam at it and the Internet will splode.

    I hope someone does it soon. I don't have the energy to sign up for a single nother website.

  • and to think i participated in a pitch contest at berkeley where the VC's brought in Justin and lauded his ability to pitch his idea....

    they said berkeley students' ideas had a lot of substance and stanford students were just able to sell. Well what about Yale students? They can just sell you crappity crap crap crap, and make you feel good doing it.

  • The trick here is to look at their alexa rankings and compare traffic and page views. Also knock the smoothing right back to min. You'll see lots of spiking, this is normally from buying traffic. Likewise with normal growth page views would remain fairly steady but these map directly with all the same curves as the rank.
    This is also indicative of traffic bought from traffic farms.
    Major traffic source after US is Chile, Argentina, Morocco?? Even if it is true, you can't monetize it, but it does look good for VC's prior to a second funding round.

    @lindsayt:

    for what it's worth, haas' pitch contests really are pretty lame.

  • and FWIW, Justin is pretty lame. He could bore the spots off a dalmation

  • @Alaska Miller good point, and one of the winners was from the ischool anyway

  • From what I heard, a lifecaster call E-TARD who just got kicked off of Justin TV and now is broadcasting on Ustream.tv called the networks and complained about their illegal activity. Any way, who cares, JTV is terrible. So many young people raiding the chat rooms and requesting broadcasters to get naked day after day. They won't last too long. Stickam is a must better.
