The Wikimedia Foundation, the nonprofit which operates Wikipedia, says its mission is to give the world free access to the sum of all human knowledge. Behind the scenes, it's responsible for the mother of all power struggles. Jimmy Wales is supposedly a figurehead — just one of many board members. Sue Gardner, the executive director, supposedly runs Wikipedia day to day — though deputy director Erik Moeller, a former board member who has long schemed to take control of Wikipedia, actually runs the site's technology and content. Florence Nibart-Devouard, a French local official, replaced Wales as the nonprofit's chair in October 2006, and thinks she's in charge. Ah, but not according to Wikimedia's legal filings.
A Florida business registration for the nonprofit filed last May shows Wales's title did change — but to "EC," short for "executive chairman," a worker in Florida's Department of State confirms. On paper, Wales still outranks Devouard. Could he have told her that "EC" stands for "emeritus chair," while secretly keeping legal authority over Wikipedia to himself? That would explain why Wales feels entitled to bypass Devoard and cut deals with venture capitalists on the side.
The legal filing:

This is about as interesting as a bunch of legal filings. News flash: Today Valleywag announces that Jimmy Wales has something to do with wikipedia! Dude, you lost me with this one.
On the other end of things, this is fascinating and I'm really glad you guys posted it.
So Wales IS the real chair, and Devouard was only made to believe she was in charge. Wait. I thought he "graciously stepped aside"? Is it any surprise that a control freak like Wales would pull a stunt like this?
Ok, so the true Secret Master of Wikipedia is one of:
Jimmy Wales, Sue Gardner, Erik Moeller, Florence Nibart-Devouard, The Bavarian Illuminati, Google, The Freemasons, Microsoft, The Rosicrucians, Paris Hilton, The CIA, Ashley Alexandra Dupré, The Mafia, Julia Allison, Fidel Castro, Michael Arrington's Blog Continuum, Vladimir Putin, The Two-Fifty, or Ceiling Cat.
Thanks for clearing that up.
@random_play: All we need now is Tom Hanks in a mullet
@foofoo:
I find it hard to believe that you genuinely think that this post is merely about establishing a relationship between Wales and Wikipedia. The post is obviously about the nature of that relationship. It is stated on the Foundation website that Wales is merely Emeritus Chair, and is therefore, as the post states, supposedly just a figurehead (albeit also a board member), with Devouard being above him, as Chair. But the above extract seems to contradict this, because Wales seems to be Executive, not Emeritus, Chair. This is obviously important, because, if true, it means that the community - and possibly including Devouard herself - has been seriously misled.
foofoo, are you perhaps Jimmy Wales?! Your fairly weak attempt to discredit this post as being merely about establishing a link between Wikipedia and Wales is reminiscent of Wales' previous attempts to deflect questions/criticisms... ;-)
Hey, look who signed the document -- a felon!
Here's a chance to ask JimbHO about all this. A talk show with a call-in number

@matto: Yes! I almost forgot the Priory of Sion.
The fact that this "not-for-profit" is registered in Florida speak volumes about how, possibly, corrupt, the whole thing is.
@dogcat
I am Jimmy Wales. You got me. R. Marsden, er, I mean, mediawhoremeowdogcat, and I are in this together to make her famous and me look like, ah, whatever (Rebecca, quick, that's your cue to post another snappy comment about Jimmy). I will let her take it from here. Thanks for posting, and don't say I never did anything for you.
Yes, and I am indeed Rachel Marsden. Hi Jimmy, er, I mean foofoo. When do we split the jackpot?
Oh yeah, it was Rachel, not Rebecca. I'm such a woman magnet, it's hard to keep them all straight.
@mediawhoremeow/@dogcat You must be sad there is no Jimmy coverage this week. Get out there and stir something up or you'll have nothing to comment on!
Seth Finkelstein, who understands Wikipedia well enough to successfully invite them to remove his biography with his article I'm on Wikipedia, get me out of here does a hard-hitting contradiction of your take on this matter on his blog with Debunking Wikimedia Foundation "executive chairman" story. Basically: there's no legal standard and EC can mean whatever they want it to mean. Keep up the good fight Owen, but you struck out this time. Remember to do all your homework before hitting that "submit" button.
Owen: Seth Finkelstein wrote a blog entry: Debunking Wikimedia Foundation "executive chairman" story which does a pretty good job of indicating that on this one, you struck out. Basically, in Florida, there is no legal standard on this kind of paperwork and Seth says that EC can mean whatever they want it to mean.
Erik Moeller, isn't he in NAMBLA?
