Hookers and lawyers cost the same

In any given city, a good escort costs the same per hour as a good lawyer. That's the rule of thumb from Valleywag sex trade reporter Melissa Gira Grant, quoted twice in major media Tuesday on the high-end hooker business. You can find Melissa in the San Francisco Chronicle and in A.M. New York, where she rebuts the conventional wisdom:

"I'm absolutely unshocked and I can't believe anyone in the media is shocked that a politician is hiring prostitutes," Gira said. "Especially for someone in a position of power it's a value proposition to hire a prostitute rather than have a mistress. What you're buying is discretion."

This is really just an example of news media telling people what they should care about. It's exactly the same as Larry Craig or Bill Clinton. People shouldn't be surprised that politicians frequent prostitutes, seek gay hookups, or date the intern; regular people do these things, so why expect anything different from politicians?

Oh, right, CNN and friends are in the business of making something out of nothing. "Politicians like regular people" doesn't sell news.

There aren't that many high priced hookers. And of these, a subset isn't even worth it. A good lawyer gets you something good or gets you out of something bad. A good hooker is like a good hamburger. No? They don't care about you. Just, "pay me." Move on.

I know nothing lower than a woman who is interested in you because of money. No respect whatsoever. Shallower than shallow.
