Microsoft has cut the price of the U.S. consumer versions of Windows Vista. The Ultimate Edition fell from $399 to $319 and the Home Premium Edition went from $159 to $129. The Register nails it: "It's hard to believe that millions of Windows XP users were just waiting for Vista to get a little cheaper before committing themselves." Why don't they just put XP back on the shelves? That seems easier. (Photo by mkeefe)

I know someone who needs a copy because some freakin' Active-X control is used with the web coursework for her anatomy class at the university. That's the best reason ever for needing to buy a copy of Windows, AFAIAC.

Lenovo charges $22.50 extra to get XP Professional instead of Home Premium.
If they really want to sell Vista, go the Apple route and sell the premium version for $129. Heck, quite a few PC's these days are in the $300-400 range. Seems stupid for an operating system to cost more than the hardware.
