Yahoo layoffs reach around the globe

Yahoo BangaloreIt didn't go well when Yahoo India sacked 40 in Bangalore this week. Employees were given just 30 minutes to clean up and go. The Economic Times reports that "emotionally distraught employees broke down on receiving the news." Then, Yahoo India CEO Sharad Sharma forbade top management from "interfacing" with laid-off employees. Too bad there isn't a Chevy's in Bangalore, eh, Ryan? (Photo by Premshree Pillai)

What is it about Yahoo and finding employees that actually care for the company?

Those of us in McTechJobs might hate them, but at least we don't feel any misplaced fondness for our employers. And it's Bangalore; tech jobs there are as easy to find as curry.

  • Oh wow. A whole 40 people? Gosh, not sure if that is news or not. While I feel for each and every person who received the news, not sure that number is anything to write home about. Besides, once they get over the next few days, they will end up happier and better off anyway. While the company still has its current VPs on up, I would not want to work there either. It needs to get rid of the Directors, VPs and other execs that are a complete waste of space and can't make any decisions without consulting 71 other people first.

I still think that at this time of need, ALL execs should be paid a base salary in line with market trends, and TOTALLY PERFORMANCE BASED BONUSES/STOCK OPTIONS, ETC. As long as you don't have anything directly related to performance, nothing good will come of it. Too many people have heard about the Yahoo Cash Cow and want a ride. Come on it, get a senior job, do nothing, make loads and leave.

At least they had the common courtesy of a reach around.

  • 40 employees in Yahoo India = $100,000/year in total salary. Talk about cost savings!

No joke, Yahoo data managers in Bangalore were pulling in $13,000/year when last I heard.

  • Tons of tech companies there. Those people wont have a hard time looking for a new job.

  • @ THEGUNSLINGER
Well said. The problem with Y! is the SVPs, VPs and Directors...

Too many Chiefs, not enough Indians (pun intended).

  • sandeep k. can't save all his indian buddies....

  • @hopeless that was probably 10 years ago. IT rates are rising higher than the sari-hemlines of the newly rich in bangalore.

  • If you think a lot of Yahoos in Sunnyvale spent an inordinate amount of time visiting the gym, playing foosball, and knocking around the coffee bars, how much value do you think forty Indian Yahoos provided?

  • How about a bad South Indian chain called "Tata's"?

  • there may not be a Chevy's but when I was there, tons of action at the TGIF's across from AOL and Ruby Tuesday on MG Road.

  • What goes around comes around. Indian techs gleefully took jobs that could have been filled by Americans. Payback's a bitch but it's coming...after all, there are other cheap places to take work now too. America's getting closer to being that!

  • @michaellamb: This was the salary in 2005. I doubt it's up to $40,000 now, but you never know in this CRAZY world.

  • avg salary could be $25k if you take into account various grades. could be a saving of 25k x 40 = 1M. If products get canned I suspect some more layoffs. I've seen Yahoo's flying to Santa Monica every week for meetings. Then they hired the motorola engineers in Urbana which was another dorky decision. If you split groups in 4 locations what are the odds of success ?
