Behold the best tech ad in Super Bowl history: Apple's "1984" ad, which cost $1.6 million to make and run, and only aired nationally once. The following nine ads, while perhaps not as iconic, are all fascinating in how they seek to make the mysteries of tech compelling to the masses.
- Apple's "1984" ad
- Monster.com from 1999
- CareerBuilder.com from 2005
- GoDaddy from 2005
- Xerox from 1977
- E*Trade from 1999
- Pets.com from 2000
- Computer.com from 2000
- SalesGenie.com from 2007
- OurBeginnings in 2000

@Alleywag: Tried to embed the video in my comment. Didn't work. But, yes, everyone go see that E*Trade ad. On the second viewing, imagine the monkey is riding through Sunnyvale. [youtube.com]
A top 10 list? Really?
No Terry Tate office linebacker? or did that never make the superbowl ad list from Reebok?
Where are the cats?
Um, I realize that EDS might not be purely a "tech" company, but the Herding Cats commercial is tied for first with Apple's 1984 commercial as the best of all time (as far as I'm concerned).
You missed one, dammit.. My favorite ad was the old E*Trade "money comin' out the wazoo" emergency room ad..

Needs some Terry Tate.
Go Terry Tate: office linebacker! BAM!
loved that shit.
Guess Little Mike from computers.com didn't get to go to college...
Pop..
So, someone tell me what was so great about the salesgenie.com commerical?
No Cindy Crawford at the Pepsi Machine, no Budweiser frogs, No Larry Bird vs Jordan, and no Mean Joe Green drinks a Coke?
Worst top 10 ever.
And who says a great feature film director can't come from commercial work first? (re: Apple's "1984" by Sir Ridley Scott)
the apple one is a classic, that ad was like before its time. I have an even better one though, a parody of a budweiser ad, (open a bottle with your ass) [opentopix.com]
I would definitely have to say that your idea of a top 10 and mine are not the same. Besides the Apple commercial, the only top 10 list I would put the other's on would be, oh, I dont know, useless waste of money, maybe....
The Vaunnies Mustardayonnaise commercial on youtube is better than the Apple 1984 commercial!
All three of these have been mentioned before individually, but I've got to put them together. Any superbowl top-10 ad list is sorely incomplete if it lacks the EDS "herding cats", E*Trade "money coming out the wazoo", and E*Trade "ride through the valley of the failed dot-coms" (link in comment #3).
OurBeginnings, SalesGenie, and the E*Trade "waste of money dancing monkey"? Puh-leez. Second-tier at best. None can hold a candle to the aforementioned triad.
@PaisleyPajamas: He was doing films before; in fact, he's still doing commercials.
The Apple ad was way ahead of its time... as always..
The eTrade monkey is adorable! lol
But yea I agree with everyone else... this top 10 list seems to be lacking quite a few memorable ads...
