TechCrunch calls Los Altos-based job board NotchUp "a stealth startup." Wrong. There's nothing stealth about NotchUp's spammy membership drive. I've got five emails in my personal inbox to prove it. Each email explains how NotchUp works (headhunters pay you!) and that NotchUp remains in a private beta. That way the riffraff stay out. So, hey, riffraff. Want to see a copy of that email, private beta username and password included?
Dear NotchUp, please stop spamming me

you and me both... I just received two of those same emails today.
I figured their sign up system tricks you into spamming your entire address book since I've received so many invites from long lost friends.
Bad side effect to this, your coworkers/boss might end up with an invite from you about your new job search
If I recall correctly from a conversation I over heard about NotchUp.. Its almost MLM/Pyramid style.. if so and so recruits you.. and you get paid.. then they get a fraction. I could be completely wrong or possibly heard the conversation wrong. But it would explain why everyones spamming everyone.
Hi, this is rob, notch up co-founder. you make a fair point and we recently capped the number of invites at 3. From here on out, you will receive no more than three invites by people you know. for those with an acctive network, like yourself, this should help.
NotchUp isn't spamming you...your friends and contacts are!
Users are given the opportunity to import LinkedIn contacts (the OPPORTUNITY to, no gun 2 head).
Users are then give the OPPORTUNITY to send invites to all their contacts.
Stop accepting connections on LinkedIn from people that don't value you and your time. A good contact doesn't spam you.
seriously, this thing is ridiculous. i received about 10 invitations in the last week or so. something tells me that this thing is about as exclusive and unique as the resume postings on craigslist. especially if they're inviting a chump like me. :) and does anyone else feel a little bit dirty even considering taking money to do a job interview? i mean, maybe if you want to work for pay per post, i could understand it ... now doostang.com for example seems to take a better approach... only people who are desirable get invited, social network be damned... ahh, i feel the cold loneliness of my high school teenage angst all over again...
What next, telemarketers are going to pay me to call me at 7pm during dinner?
it is absolutely fucking annoying - got a few this week as well - the basic idea: go to all of the folks on monster.com and try to convince them to set up profiles on notchup by deluding them into thinking that companies like google will pay them from 500 to 2k to meet them....also, if you really want a laugh, check out their formulas in the roi bullshit (as in: it takes ten days to win with notchup, etc)..
NotchUp = FAIL!
Has anyone bothered to read NotchUp's (or, should we say GrandCentral.com's knock-off?) Terms Of Service?
Please, do so.
Please, read LinkedIn's terms and privacy.
Compare. Contrast. How do you feel?
I can't bring myself to accept a TOS when I cannot see what my real "Privacy" settings are until later in the process. I've worked for list generating companies before, and this sure sounds familiar.
Sure, everything is secure--and I don't doubt that. But is it private? Remember, NotchUp takes no responsibility as to what recruiters do with your resume or email address--nor do they make any guarantees about payments making it to you.
Read the fine print before getting caught up in the money.
